As expected, there are mixed reviews on both if these models. The 9900 seems to have bad reviews regarding the battery. Is it really terrible? The battery on the 9790 is better, but obviously not as fast 9900, which i understand actually came out before the 9790. Which would you prefer?
Also, as I understand os 7 has wifi hotspot capabilities, that means it uses whats in my data package?
Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry Bold 9900: Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9900; en) AppleWebKit/534.11+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.1.0.190 Mobile Safari/534.11+)
The battery on the 9900 is not the greatest, but it's also not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I can usually get through a day with heavy usage, and I have an extra battery for those days that I can't quite make it.
As for hotspot, it depends on the data plan you have with your carrier. Some carriers include hotspot usage, some charge for it. The feature is available on OS 7.1 though.
Check out Howard's review of the 9790 here; it should answer a lot of your questions.

I don't know where you live or who your carrier is. If you have AT&T and a MicroCell, be prepared to charge! When I'm at home connected to the MicroCell, I lose about 20% of battery per hour. No, that's not a typo. To be fair, I blame the MicroCell, not the phone. I had the same problem with my Torch. I've even deleted my phone from the MicroCell account, but it still connects to it for some reason.
This confusion can easily be avoided if you pronounce the word intended aloud. If it has a voiced Z sound, then it’s “lose.” If it has a hissy S sound, then it’s “loose.” Here are examples of correct usage: “He tends to lose his keys.” “She lets her dog run loose.”
Loose
not rigidly fastened or securely attached
Lose
to miss from one's possession or from a customary or supposed place
Also, just because a word has an "s" at the end, doesn't mean it needs an apostrophe.
I live in Canada. I'm sort of doing home work on the various smart phones that are currently available. I have mixed feelings about getting an iphone, because I have an itouch which I use frequently at home, on wifi of course.
I thinking about an Android such as the Galaxy s2, but as with the Iphones, I'm not a huge fan of touch screens. I prefer a physical keyboard of a Blackberry. The 9900 looks so nice, but I don't like the idea of a battery draining to quick. Also, I own a Torch 9800, let me tell you it freezes sometimes, on bad days I find myself restarting the phone 2-3 times. I also read the 9900 has somewhat similar issues. I'll check out the HF review now for the 9790.
I asked about the wifi-hotspot, because since I have an Itouch, I can have the best of both worlds when I use wifi on my Itouch, supplied by the Blackberry. I am planning to get a phone with Telus Mobility.

I have the 9900, worse thing you may need an extra battery. the handset is friggin awesome. extra bit of coin for a spare battery is totally worth it. go for the 9900

Well, other than the battery I really love the phone. It's easily been the best BB I've had yet (as it should be, I suppose). The battery would certainly last longer if not for this stupid MicroCell. I can tell you not to get an iPhone, but I can't give you an unbiased reason. I just hate them and, basically, all they stand for anymore. I've got an older iPod Touch and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. It has got to be the worst piece of hardware I've ever used. I can't stand the thing.
Sup guys? As I am now aware, updating to BB OS 7.1 should resolve the battery issue. It probably doesn't resolve everything, but just enough to not complain about it. I am going to pick up the 9900, the 9790 might not do it for me. We'll see if a second battery is required.
Blackberries serves specific purposes. I work with my hands, often my hands are dirty. An iphone's touch screen just won't do. A BB is pretty rugged, I've owned two already, this will be my third. I'm not loyal or anything, but It just makes sense in getting another BB, a 9900.

I'm still not sure what a microcell is. I look it up on wiki.
"microcell uses power control to limit the radius of its coverage area."
Is this partly correct? Explain how microcell affects battery life. Thanks.

They are also called femtocells.

Basically, the coverage is crap at my house. The microcell hooks up to my internet to provide coverage. It shouldn't affect battery life. My gf's BB Torch connects to it with no battery issues at all. My previous BB (also a Torch) and now this 9900 both connect to it, but the battery drains within a few hours.
So all in all, you really shouldn't have a problem. It will use battery faster than what we are used to with BlackBerrys, but I think my situation is the exception rather than the rule.

I'll agree on the underlined quote above. I'm just curious on a) why is this one going to be your third? Is it because the BB is rugged against dirt ?
b) also how well do you think a physical keyboard will stand against dirty hands use when the dirt gets into the keys affecting physical movement or reception of the keys being pressed; over time? a screen is quite sealed and thus can just be easily wiped?
I look forward to seeing how useful the BB is after daily dirty hand use (5days/wk) over say 6mths - no physical damage of course. still a good choice overall and over all BB products.

Right off the top, I agree with you about being able to wipe clean a touch screen phone. Phones with a physical keyboard may collect dust between the keys.
My mechanic friend uses non smart phones. He feels his oily hands shouldn't hold touch screen phones. I feel the same, I work two different jobs, both if which my hands are significantly dirty. Either covered in pizza toppings, or as you stated dirt and garbage.
At the end of the day, its preference, want vs need. I have a toy already, I just need a phone. With my phone I can power my toy, for when I choose to use it.

This wasn't directed at me, but both questions apply so I'll also answer.
A) The 9900 is my 9th BlackBerry. That doesn't mean there was anything wrong with the previous 8. Just like there was nothing wrong with my previous TV, PC, etc. We all know that a vast majority of HoFo members are more interested than most in tech. I love tech/gadgets/toys, and I love new things. Pretty simple.
B) A physical keyboard stands up just fine over time. I work construction and have never had a problem with a BB keyboard (or any dumbphone keypad, for that matter). I used to have trouble with the trackballs on my previous Pearls and Curves, but they were cheap and simple enough to replace, so it wasn't really an issue.

The damn trackball was one of the reasons I bailed on bb. They were horrible. I do like the 9900 setup. Its a great device.
