If you already have the line it doesn't matter, as long as it's TMO.

If you don't have the line yet you won't be able to use the load-directly-to-phone as you don't have a number to send it to, and can't convert an existing number to that plan. I do have the plan already and load the funds directly to the account.

You could get a $30 PIN or you can use any PIN just as long as it's enough to pay for your plan. You could buy a $100 PIN and add two $10 PINs and you would have four months paid. T-Mobile doesn't care what you put in your account as long as it covers charges that you pay to prepay your month. Also having $10 or so to buffer is probably a good idea in case there are some extra charges that may come along.
