If from a static image there are programs to restore the screen (or if wishing to do it on the cheap, you simply reverse it by leaving the opposite on screen for an extended time).

Again not saying it is impossible to have a display issue but its not possible to burn a static image into a AMOLED screen
It is sad I need to state the obvious but some people just don't get it. Any posts I make are my own OPINIONS and in no way represent the views of my employer

Don't know what the correct technical term is for this...but after 10 months with my Samsung Galaxy S2 the home screen icons are now a permanent part of the display. My phone is NOT left on for hours at a time. It automatically shuts off the display after a few seconds. I've always have it set that way. I will be sending my phone off to Samsung for repair/replace soon.

The proper term may simply be "degradation". That is what happens to AMOLED displays. The organic material forms the actual electroluminescent layer and unfortunately degrades over time. Continuous activation of individual pixels at a particular colour will result in colour shifts and "ghost" images. It is akin to the old CRT phosphor burn-in but by a very different physical mechanism. Simple LED matrix and LCD displays can also exhibit forms of degradation, some partially reversible, others not.

So I got a UPS shipping label from Samsung and shipped my SGS2 off to Samsung for repair. My concern is that this is a flaw that will keep coming back every 8 - 10 months or so. In other words: the question is can Samsung actually FIX this permanently?

No, this cannot be fixed. The "O" in AMOLED is for organic. That means it has a finite life, similar to CRT monitors and plasma TV phosphors.

I work in the video information-display industry, so screen burn is a constant issue with displays left on for long periods with non-moving images. I knew OLED displays would have a life problem compared to LCD, but I had forgot to even think about burn-in until I saw it on a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone at the Sprint store yesterday. Ugh!

Sufficient reason to consider NOT purchasing...

Indeed, after poor HSPA coverage, screen burn is totally unacceptable and reason enough in my opinion to refuse to buy unless there is at least a 3 year warranty (the length of most contracts in Canada) against this defect.

my samsung note 2 has really bad burn in, namely the digital clock and the home row of app icons. I am trying an app that flashes red, blue, green and white colors over and over again but it's not really working. It really sucks it's like there's a constant clock on my phone's screen :/

it's an amoled screen, the o stands for "organic" which means yes, it is well documented that these screens burn in

    Folks,

I have mentioned this topic before... http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...1#post15054441

I do not have a contract and my Galaxy S II GT-I9100 was brought as a grey stock from Romania more than 2 years ago. In my case, the uneven burn-in appears in the notification bar area. It will not be shown in portrait mode easily unless the app make use of the full screen. But anyone could see it in landscape mode. I have used this app that claims to neutralize the condition... https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...viorfree&hl=en but it is not as effective after this long.

The key is not about keeping the display off as much as possible but NOT to keep the images / icons / background as "static" as possible. If you have always stayed on the home screen, the row of icons of the 4 or 5 frequent access apps are "static", thus inducing the relatively higher usage with certain pixels and colours than in other area of the display.

Samsung knows about this condition and this is the reason why it now uses gray background colour, instead of black, for the notification bar to minimize the uneven burn-in. For many older handsets, the Jelly Bean update has got it but it may be a little too late.

this is the reason why the q10 has a dark theme for colour scheme vs the z10, to reduce the severity of burn in.

    Re: Amoled Screen Burn!!!

    thechidz,

    Greetings.

It really depends on what exactly your objective is... that particular app is more catering the black background notification bar area than the static icons of the frequently accessed apps in the bottom row on the home screen.

Flashing the notification bar area for 5 minutes everyday with different colours may not be sufficient to accelerate the burn-in rate to match with the rest of display. The older the handset, the longer it would take. So an hour a day until the visible results?! I do not know. Consult with the app author for advice.
