Gingerbread and above have a native sip client. May not be as good as csipsimple but can't beat integrated.

If you want to try pbxes, download sipdroid and use that to sign up for an account. There's a way to manually add a gtalk trunk otherwise too if you need further help. But technically the free accounts aren't eligible for gtalk trunking. Then you can setup your native sip (internet calling in call settings)

    Pl1, I agree. $20 is k

    Ack typing on the phone.

PL1, I agree. $20 is reasonable. It's just funny you can pick your own number from google's number pool for free. I picked out a number that would be fantastic to use as my main number but everyone knows my old number.

Hopefully they extend free calling after this year again. I think we're all assuming it.

Unless there is something special about your phone or Virgin Mobile, you just go to Google Voice through Google.com. Sign up on that page, and you can fill out an online request to port your number.

You cannot port a Virgin Mobile number straight to Google Voice.

I got a SIM activation kit from TMobile. Not sure if the promo is still going on, but it was $0.99 shipped, limit 2 per order.
Picked two up. Activated one on the $30 100min 5gb plan. Activated the other on the pay per minute plan.

The beauty is that the activation kit comes with $3.34 (10 minutes @ 33c/min), so you don't need to refill the account at all. Port the VM number onto here, and then port it from here to GV.

GV charges $20 for the port-in. Paid $0.99 to transfer from VM to TMO.

Hindsight, what I should have done was use the temporary TMO number (you initiate the port after activating) to sign up for another GV account.

It looks like GV currently only supports porting from the major wireless carriers: VZW, ATT, TMO, Sprint. MVNOs / landlines are not allowed.

I'm guessing using TMO as the middleman is probably pretty standard among people wanting to port to GV.

Yes, that is object to keep your number. So, before you do that, you need to create a new account somewhere with a new number. It can be T-Mobile. You will get calls on Google Voice forwarded to what ever phone number you tell it to forward to.

They do spell that all out for you when filling out the application process.

I see. Yes, probably since the TMO SIM is the cheapest alternative, right from their site. You can get AT&T SIMs off Ebay pretty cheap too.

Back to the original question, it's possible to do in store too. I just went with my friend that bought an Exhibit II and had activated it with a temp number on that plan. We then went to the T-Mobile store and explained we wanted to move over the number. No talking to India doing it that way.

It was my friend who had at&t. Activated in Walmart, then went to the T-Mobile store only to avoid calling themselves. T-Mobile was more than happy to lend a hand. Quite impressed.

no Peggy ;-) I think if you have a store nearby that is always a nice option as they have some insider line that gets them through immediately so no waiting involved.

Having said that, I will say that t-mobile's customer service is the best I have dealt with yet. I porting from VZW through their porting department and it went smoothly and quickly. As long as you are porting an active number it won't be a problem whichever way you choose to port.

How long does it take to port a number from VM to T-Mobile? Does it really take 48 hours? Or longer?
