No reception on BART in San Francisco any more?

    Hi, all --

I've had Sprint or Virgin Mobile service on various devices for the past several years. I have a daily commute on BART in San Francisco, and have always been able to get good reception throughout San Francisco while riding and in the station. (All the major carriers have cells throughout the BART system in San Francisco specifically to provide service while riding.)

Since Tuesday the 21st, I've had a "No Service" message while underground on BART. No voice, no data, nothing at all while underground. This is also the case for my wife on her Virgin phone. Everything works normally when I'm out of the subway.

I've tried Twitter, and Virgin claims there is not an outage and won't address this issue. This is a major part of my commute, and it's the time when I use my phone the most, so if Virgin has dropped reception in the tunnels, it's time to find a new carrier.

Can anyone with Virgin (or Sprint/Boost et al) who rides the BART let me know if they're experiencing the same issue?

    Thanks!

Yes, I am having the same problem. I am on Credo Mobile, which uses Sprint towers. It's extremely frustrating, and I cannot find anything online about it except this one forum post. I have talked with others who have Credo, Virgin, and Sprint, and the story is the same. I do get roaming (and luckily roaming is free on Credo), but it loads slowly and is choppy.

Daughter has iphone on Sprint and rides BART from SF to Richmond to take the train to Sacramento on most weekends. I will ask her if she loses the signal.

I have Virgin Mobile and I haven't had any reception, voice or data, since Thursday Feb. 23, 2012 while underground. I wish I can find more information regarding this matter, but so far there has been little to no information on the web. Time to find out from VM.

    Cheers.

OP, here. I recently got information both from VM and from BART (independently, having reported the issue to both) on the lack of reception in the tunnels.

VM confirmed that an antenna was down that was causing the outage and that their engineers were working on the issue, and BART suspected that the retrofit going on at Powell station had created the outage and would share the information with their staff.

That said, there was still no reception throughout BART for me this morning. It's extremely frustrating, as responding to email is often part of my commute. Tomorrow will be an entire week of outage for me. I wonder how much longer I can go. If Verizon weren't $80/month for the same thing I get from Virgin for less than half that, I would have already switched.

Still no reception underground! I started to hate VM even more.

This is how VM responded back to me on twitter on March'2:

Hello! No, this information has not yet been received. Once it has been received we will definitely provide an update. ^TW

Does anyone know if there is VM WiMAX service on BART subways?

Interested in getting the HTC Evo V 4G, which uses WiMAX.
