You raise many thoughtful points about size changes. I would only add that it is common to confuse the size of the device with the size of the screen. I don't think people want bigger handsets, but many of use do want bigger displays on our "pocket computers". Even so, we still want smaller phones.
To show what I mean, what if there was a seamless 'folding display' -- like the old 'clamshell' phones of a few years ago? The the phone could be half the size of the display. Most people would like, I think, having a bigger display in a smaller handset. Won't happen anytime soon. But the example shows that we can want bigger displays and smaller phones at the same time.
