Verizon/cdma mvnos that allow byod are few and far between and the cdma regional independents that do don't have Verizon's coverage...
I looked at the GSM MVNOs and although there are some good plans, in the end PP is still the best option for me in terms of value, so I would still like to use an iPhone on PP if possible. Could I buy a SIM-unlocked Verizon iPhone 4S on eBay, and then activate it on PP? I say SIM-unlocked because I also want to be able to use the iPhone overseas. PP's 120 day expiration for their prepay plans is perfect for this (I can keep my number when away).
I know this is probably overly complicated; actually I haven't decided what I want to do, so I just want to gather some opinions.
Once the next iPhone comes out you will find a sim-unlocked 4S a lot easier. Right now it might be hard to find one since the majority of them are being used on Verizon. I have two right now on Page Plus.
Thanks for your suggestion. Yeah, I couldn't find anyone selling a SIM-unlocked Verizon iPhone. I was wondering whether I could buy a Verizon 4S and activate it on a friend's Verizon plan for 60 days, then ask for an unlock? I don't know much about Verizon so I don't know if there's a cancellation fee after 60 days.
I've also began to wonder whether this will all be easier on an Android phone. I've never stepped into Android territory before so I know very little. Can I get a true "world phone" on Android?
Yes, there are world phone Androids. Incredible 2, Droid 3, Droid 2 Global, to name a few. No modifications are needed to use these phones on PPC.

Just to throw this in the mix. PP rep stated yesterday while I was on a chat that VW is scanning their database for iPhone users and shutting them down and they lose any credit on the account. Don't shoot the messenger, just telling you what I was told so you can make an educated decision before activating an iPhone on PP.
If you need assistance doing a sim unlocked let me know as I can help. The same applies to activation on Page Plus. Just PM me.Thanks for your suggestion. The Verizon 4S SIM can be unlocked with the same method as the Sprint version - namely a Gevey Ultra S or similar SIM interposer device. Google is your friend, and prices have come way down already on them.
Thanks everyone for the helpful info. I know this is going a little off topic but I have another question: is it true that there aren't any smartphones that will work on both Verizon and AT&T (aka both CDMA and GSM) here in the US, even if unlocked? I ask because I'm wondering about the amount of freedom you get in using a smartphone with different carriers.
Definitely go with the Gevey, the SAM method is too complicated for most folks and has some limitations. Just make sure you get the right version of the Gevey there is a newer revision for iOS 5 and the newer basebands...
