Here is the link from >>>Engadget<<<, it does have the official statement. I was guessing for 20 Mpx...but 41 Mpx.....enjoy!

It has a 5Mpx output but with 7 times over sample to reduce noise and provides a clear picture. The total is 35Mpx. The reason that it uses a 41Mpx sensor is to accommodate both 4:3 and 16:9 formats. There are portions of the sensor that are not used but there is no cropping needed on the picture to get either formats. What Nokia did was to find a solution to get mechanical zoom camera like performance on a cell phone camera. Since Win7 is new OS to Nokia, it is probably best for Nokia to stick to Bella which is less risky. Putting too much new technology on a new device is asking for trouble.
Folks tend to go Gaga with the specs. They raved about the Sensor size or putdown the Processor speed. At the end of the day, the things that count is how the phone works. If Nokia PureView is stable and it has the best camera, it has a niche that no phone company can complete. For those who say the camera is not important on a phone, just take a look at YouTube. Nokia has a winner in this phone.
