Price increase makes no sense.
Apple is upgrading some features so it stands to reason the price will go up?

IMO prices will go up. Apple upgrades devices every year and prices rarely if ever go up on any of their products. In face sometimes prices go down with better specs. Like in the case of the first MacBook Air to the second iteration.

Every generation sees improvements in features or performance but prices generally tend to stay the same or drop. While a price increase for new features could happen, but it wouldn't be the norm for a new version release. What might happen is that instead of two categories (wifi and wifi+3G) we might see a third added at a higher price, maybe differentiated on the Retina Display and/or LTE on the highest end model. In that case, both rumours, of a price increase and the price staying the same, could be true. The models that replace the current models stay the same, albeit with a performance bump, and a new category introduced at a higher price. That might also explain why we hear rumours of both iPad 3 and iPad HD. My guess is they stay with the two model state and prices stay the same.

My best guess is that there will still be three models at 499$, 599$ and 699$. But for what sizes, not sure? Some have been saying that there wont be as many GB sizes. But I think they would still have three to keep in line with getting value at 499 and extra margins on 699. My only guess on the extra cost for 3G (or LTE if it comes) is that it will remain the same too.
In the end though, I think they will be hard pressed to make any increases in cost due to the precedent that has been set. There has been some discussion I have see that with cloud storage such as iCloud and DropBox there is not as much of a need for local storage. However, I don't think they would decrease the storage from 16 to 8GB for instance for the same price to make up for any increased cost for the purported retina display. There would be a lot of outcry about that.
Of course this is all just my speculation, so I accept being wrong when it all comes out.

Good thought. I heard the reports of the iPad HD being on the inventory sheet. Perhaps they could make a iPad 3 without retina and a iPad HD with, but I wonder what would be the value add or reason to upgrade from iPad 2 to iPad 3 if it did not have retina be default. One rumour that was floating around was the 8GB iPad 2. They could choose to just make a 8 GB iPad 3 that does not have many improvements other than the chassis and have that be a budget iPad for schools at 399$. Then, have iPad HD being 16, 32 & 64GB with with the price points that we are used to.

I would get the 3 if the display was upgraded, the quad core or performance boost... If those two things are going to cost a arm and a leg, I will get the ipad2 and maybe that price will be reduced more thane the $50.00 I've been seeing at best buy.

Bull. No other tablet platform even compares: apps, uses, abilities to improve education for ALL ages! If you're looking you'll be buying - only the price will matter retail madness or grey market/hwy robbery. Unless Android and their friends get it together, and they will, this year or whenever.

I'm not sold on if there's a price increase.
You don't have to extol the merits if ios on me.
Why is everyone so convinced there's going to be a price increase, especially with the "they're upgrading features" argument? Does the ipad 2 have all the same hardware and features and the ipad 1? I'm pretty sure there were upgrades between the two and the price points were still the same. Same with the ipod touch haven't they always been $199 (8gb when first came out if memory serves) $299 (16gb when first came out) and $399 (32gb when first came out) and even after the sizes went to 16gb, 32gb and 64gb the price points were still the same (although why now the first one is back down to 8gb, and then goes up to 32gb and 64gb is beyond me)
and the iPhone was 16gb (first one 8? I dunno) for $699 ($199 on contract) and 32gb for $799 ($299 on contract) but then when the antenna issue happened with the iphone 4 all prices across the board dropped $50. but then the 4S came out, they added the 64gb for equal rate of increase (which would have likely been $899, but is $849 to be in line with the other devices, and $349 on contract) but basically, ignoring the iphone 4 antenna price drop, the iphone sizes have always have the same price point, as did the various levels of ipods and ipads, so why does everyone think now the ipad is going to have a price increase because of improved features and funcitonality and hardware? ALL apple products come out with improved features and functionality and hardware.
Thank goodness Apple products are improving; you make deprecation sound almost like it doesn't apply to this company (although looking at pecos iPhone prices, it's pretty obvious it does).
I'm still puzzling over the physical difference between the iPhone 4 and 4S (S stand for "software?") but I'm sure the new iPad will have some major differences in it.
Maybe the rumors there will be a low-end iPad to combat the non-threat of Android e-readers, suggests the higher-end iPad will become more expensive just because. Maybe retina screens are hard to produce. Maybe Foxconn workers will get a needed raise, who knows.
