As long as you keep a smartphone active, you will keep unlimited data

I'm on an older unlimited data/voice/txt smartphone plan ($120/mo), and I need to replace my phone (Droid X). I called in and was told I would have to give up the unlimited data. I would prefer to stay with VZW rather than going to a prepaid unlimited plan, but I will leave before I give up the unlimited data. I use about 1.5-2GB/month, and just like the flexibility of not worrying about my data usage.
So, what would they do if I just bought a craigslist/ebay phone and activated it online? Will they switch me to another plan even though I'm not upgrading through VZW? Or, would they even notice? Do I have to stay with 3G or could I get by with a 4G upgrade?

If time is up for an upgrade, you can upgrade through VZW and keep unlimited. You just have to keep some sort of smartphone on the line continually.
Thanks everyone! Everything worked fine online! I don't know if they get a commission or credit for upgrades and extensions when you call the 611 number, but she just lost out if so.
Oh lord, I really hope the Verizon reps don't get rewarded for convincing users to give up their unlimited data for tiered plans. They'll feed so many unsuspecting customers lies and B.S to get them to switch (Oh, this new phone is somehow not compatible with your new plan, you'll have to change to our new ones!). > : (
If they sign up for any plan other than the $30 option they would be compensated since their access charges go up.
