I have a plan with Rogers in Canada and recently unlocked my S2 LTE to be able to use the phone on T-Mobile over the winter while I'm in the US. I purchased a SIM card and set up a month to month 4G plan. Everything works fine except I can only get their Edge network instead of the 4G. T-Mobile claims I need a firmware update to enable it to access their 4G, but I am reluctant to do this as the phone may not work properly when I get back home and change over to my original SIM card.
I thought it would have had to be a USA version for t-mobile as the hpsa network had to have the snapdragon cpu for it to be compatible as well as the AWS2100 spectrum support.
The good news however is T-mobile is doing a big round of network upgrades to support moving 4g to non aws devices over the next year or so with spectrum and stuff they got from the att divorce.
