Putting Google Voice on LG Optimus V

Help! I'm new to this smartphone business. I got a plan with a limited number of minutes and I heard you could install Google Voice and make calls through that. Well, I've made a mess of it. I got a Google account and then a Google number and it went downhill after that. I didn't know what kind of choices to make regarding using my mobile number or porting and.... long story short, I just cancelled the whole google account and number and everything. Before I start this again, could somebody give me some guidance or better yet, come to my house and program this phone for me.
