A nokia will most likely be the first phone of a user, because they get it for free or at a discounted price with their plan, or prepaid package. Then once the user wants a new phone they can go and get whatever else they want.
What kind of silly theory is that?? What market analysis did you hear that from??
Did Nokia pull a gun to your head and say "Your first phone is better be a NoKiA... or else I gonna pull the trigger you b*tch!~"? No, your "Nokia will MOST LIKELY be" is totally irrelevant, your first phone can be everything, anything, Ericsson and other brands also have free and discounted phones available. You say that cause your first phone is a Nokia? HAHA (And now you are using something else... Oh... that's why!)
BLove57: You used 5 years as an example or some sort of comparison in the wireless industry? 5 years man! That's the equivalent time of you being born, flunk your first math test in elementary, got dumped by your girl in your early teens and die 80 years later! (Hey it's a joke! But do you get my point??)
If you can use your T68 for 5 damn years, I will be the first one to clap my hands, and I will buy you a dinner. You can choose whatever you wish to eat, on me baby! How's that sound to you??

BLove57 is partially right about the Nokia phone thing, but it's also due to Nokia's marketing strategies and the user friendliness of Nokias, not just the free/discounted phone deals since there are many other phones out there that were discounted such as the T18 e.t.c. The deficiency of those "other" company's phones is that they did not help Ericsson garter as much popularity as Nokia did with its discounted handsets. It's true that they did not force you, but what I think he refers to is the majority of the public picking Nokia handsets.
i don't understand how this turned into a bash nokia thread. i, myself, am guilty of getting into this debate and we should really stop it.
for people who don't like nokia, what the hell are you doing in this forum? you obviously don't like nokia so what you are wasting your time in this forum? don't you have better things to do? go and fondle your phone but don't waste the time of people who are interested in information about nokias.
Check nokia's site. They are introducing the 7210 model which is tri-band, has 4096 colour screen, MMS, Java, FM radio, MIDI ringtones...etc etc etc. Did anybody mention about T68 being the best phone?

see, now nokia's playing catch up because they found that they were going down the tubes. and theyre doing it in a big way. theyre starting to come out of the darkness of suckiness. now only if they made a tri-band 8290... how perfect
After all these new Nokia models, competition is going to be difficult. Ericsson's T68 seems weak compared to 7210. I guess everybody is moving to 3G with all their effords.
dont mean tp steal your steam astroboy but he was quoting me not BLove
and you covered it correctly :0 its all about nokia's marketing, name recognition, and the ads that the carriers have showcasing mostly nokia products (on TV... jamie lee with a 3390, AT&T with a "cool nokia 51xx phone" same with verizon and other companies. Even overseas not everyone uses motorola or nokia. Its just name recognition (and the silly face plate thing, the logos and so on.)
The low end phone market is driven by teens, which grow up and use nokia as grownups too (kinda like cigarettes )! As soon as motorola and sonyericsson cater a little more to the teen population, nokia will go a little down.
Nokia was catering mostly to teens, or the younger generation, but now with these "cool" tribands they are catering a little more to the adult population (or perhaps the first generation of nokia kids that have grown up a little)

Usually, a well design phone would also sell in HK too. But not the new Nokia 6310i tri-band (see nokia offical website). When Nokia 7110 sell in HK, Nokia had lost a huge market share in HK. (that's when samsung start gaining their market share in CDMA and GSM network in HK/Singapore/China) Immediately, they repackage the 8210 and start selling the 8250 version. The 8250 really helps their share and consumer trust back. Nokia realized that some phones just won't do well in Asia market (exclude Aust.)
Weight and Sizes defines a huge factor. 5510, 7110, 6210, 6310, 9110 all have the same problem - overweight.

well you are right, not everyone is the same, and if nokia tries to market something that consumers wont really be receptive to they will lose shares. quite normal if you ask me.
the 7110, 6210, 6310 are not overweight, its perception, and usage. I am used to the candybar phone, so is teh asian population I believe (from what I see here and abroad). The 91xx/92xx series is a niche market, not everyone will use it. Given an opportunity I would use 7110, 6210, 6310, 92xx
see, now nokia's playing catch up because they found that they were going down the tubes.
you can look at it that way or you can look at it as nokia waiting to see what the competition was doing so that nokia could one-up them. first one out of the starting blocks isn't always the winner of the race.

I can kinda draw a parallel with US GSM systems and how long it took them to get GSM
