Is there a way to switch to 2G networks only on iPhone 3GS?

My boss is furious because AT&T throttled his data on his iPhone 3GS. I heard that you could switch to 2G networks only on iPhone but I couldn't find the option to do it on his phone.

If you go to: Settings-General-Network, there should be an option to turn 3G off.

I believe they got rid of that option with iOS 5. I cant do that on my 4S. I had to jailbreak and use SBSettings to be able to use 2G only.

I'm on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 and the option is still there for me.

    Maybe the 4s's can't?

How about googling before you comment, next time. It helps people get clear concise, helpful info.

Not sure why the hell you'd want to be on EDGE..you'll get the same speeds but with worse latency!! (and possibly worse call quality)
    iPhone 4 on AT&T:

It's my bosses iPhone (3GS). His 3G was throttled so bad that he couldn't even look at his email. Since they're throttling 3G and not EDGE he should at least be able to check his email on EDGE.

I tried that and he got no signal whatsoever. Does it take a while for EDGE to kick in?

That would suck for him as he wouldn't have the balls to jailbreak his baby.

I toggle 3G off all the time in my iPhone. It drops the signal than picks it back up after a few seconds.

This is correct for the 3GS. The 3GS and 4 with iOS 5.0.1 have the ability to toggle 3G off. The 4S does not have this option.

I did read some threads about how iOS 5.1 beta versions have the 3G toggle once again available for the 4S but we won't know if that makes it to the production 5.1 until release.

I hope they reinstate it for the 4S.

Back on topic, has it been confirmed that if you are throttled on 3G, that EDGE is not throttled? Do you get better speeds on 2G/EDGE than a throttled-3G connection? I'm curious.

Also, FYI AT&T just recently changed the throttling policy.
    http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/1/283...cap-to-3gb-for

If he never wants to be throttled again, he can switch to the tiered pricing which starts at $30 for 3GB and and additional $10 per GB over that. Or the $50 for 5GB (which also allows tethering.) On these tiered plans they never throttle, you just keep buying more data.

IMO, the iPhone is basically almost useless for any kind if data at EDGE speeds. You can't even open a simple website.

And not so many years ago we all used EDGE and were actually quite excited to have speeds of 100-200kbps. My how times have changed and how spoiled we get with 2Mbps+ wireless speeds (myself included)

Yeah, that's because all we did was WAP 1.2/2.0 with tiny pictures and terribly unreadable fonts and sent automatically resized pics through MMS. I was actually happy that I was actually able to get anything done as opposed to the 300 baud speed of CSD.

Now, it's HD video and full/mobile html and other data hungry appz...
