Question How To Get Pictures Off an Old Cellphone?

I have an old Motorola E815 dumbphone. I was looking to see what was on the phone today and noticed that it has a few pictures. Obviously I would like to get these pictures off the phone.

What is the best way to get the pictures? Reactivate it for a day?

The 2gb sd card I have is not being able to transfer the pictures. It does it then it cancels in the middle. Anyone have any ideas of how to do this?

According to http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phon...orola-e815.htm, the E815 supports up to 256MB cards.

2GB may be too much for it as it's an old phone. You may also try formatting the card on the E815. You will want to copy any data you want onto a computer or different phone BEFORE formatting the card.

Transfer the photos to the phone and use Bitpim to copy them to your computer.

You need a smaller, older sdcard 1 GB or less and it must be formatted with FAT file system not FAT32 as most or all sdcards 2GB or larger will be.

The e815 can only read and write to a FAT file system.

You can use a disk utility on a PC to format a larger card with a 1 GB or less FAT partition and then the phone will be able to access it.
When you are finished transferring your pics you would then format the card again with FAT32 with its full size partition so it can be fully utilized by more current devices.

You shouldn't need a program, as long as your computer has an SD card reader you can just format the card with Windows. However as KBman stated, an SD card larger than 1GB will NOT work with the E815 no matter how you format it. I used an E815 for 4 years and I remember it was even difficult to get the 1GB cards to work sometimes. The phone only supported cards up to 512mb's however it was possible to get 1GB cards to work but no card over 1GB will work in that phone.

I guess I just need to buy a smaller SD card to get the pictures.

I second bitpim. If the actual option to get photos doesn't work (as it hasn't on one or two phones I've tried it on) you can still pick direct filesystem access, and poke around until you find the directory that is entirely JPEGs and AVIs. Those are your photos and videos.

This may be slow... some older phones, even though they are USB and not serial, still get like 10KB/sec. Just be patient I guess, it still only amounts to 5 or 10 minutes max. I did actually get one phone to do bitpim over bluetooth, but it was unreliable... I suspect the "normal" part of the firmware didn't know bitpim was transferring data, and shut the bluetooth off.

You will need to use file system access to read the e815 with BitPim because it uses a Motorola file system rather than the QualComm reference file system.
You will also have to manually set the COM port for BitPim to the Motorola USB modem.

I am pretty certain that if you format the 2 GB card as 1 GB FAT it will be able to be read by the phone and should work. This trick was used by several people back when those cards first started to be available and it was discovered that FAT32 cards couldn't be read at all or would have glitches and data loss or cause the phone to reboot.
