samsung galaxy s2x telus warranty question

    Hello

I was thinking of buying the s2x telus version from craigslist. I was wondering if someone who bought the phone from telus sells me this phone, would I be able to enjoy the 1 year manufacturer warranty? I understand that the warranty starts when the phone is first bought. I'm just wondering if that warranty will be transferred to me under these scenerios?

    1. If the seller had bought the phone from telus outright.
    a. If the seller has kept the original receipt and gives it to me.
    b. If the seller has lost the original receipt and does not provide me with it.

    2. If the seller had bought the phone as an upgrade.
    a. if the seller has kept the original receipt and gives it to me.
    b. If the seller has lost the original receipt and does not provide me with it.

In case I do get to enjoy the warranty, will I be taking my phone to a telus store if it needs repair or will I send the phone directly to the manufacturer. I don't plan to use the phone with the telus network after I purchase it.

Before you purchase the phone request that you also ask for a warrenty validation sheet. The seller can pick this up at a telus store or even of his profile online. For any warrenty issues you would deal with telus. They will send it to service centre as long as you have the warrenty validation or pop

They have removed the validate warranty button in the device switch screen online. They changed that screen to a new version of the page and that button appears to be missing now. I'm not aware if they moved the function somewhere else but I cannot see it.

I don't know of any other way that you can print out your own warranty validation sheet but my experience has been that an official Telus device will show up on the new owners equipment screen once the old owner has connected some other device to their account and you have connected the new device to yours. At that point the dealer just goes into your account, prints out the warranty sheet and sends off the phone for you (may be a service fee at some dealers to handle the warranty)

We think everyone should be able to afford a wireless phone. That's why we were the first wireless company in North America to offer pay-by-the-second airtime, and why we don't charge an activation fee. NO scary contract to sign. Immediate national coverage. And a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Yes, it's finally time to get a wireless phone.

Que_ball your right. I forgot that when u swap equitment you can print off the warrenty validation off your own profile it should switch over autonatcally. I guess its still a nice thing to have fron the seller just for your own peace of mind before you buy the phone.

Are you assuming that I'll be using the phone with the telus network? I plan to be using the phone with wind mobile. So from what I understood, I would insert the wind SIM and I would be able to view the warranty sheet on the phone?
And by dealer you mean telus store representative?

If you are using the phone on Wind you will find it nearly impossible to submit the phone for warranty without the original invoice unless you attach it to a Telus SIM and allow the phone time to show up in the current equipment list on that account at which point the dealer can then bring up the warranty status of that phone. The dealer doesn't have an easy way to search for the warranty by simply typing in the serial number of the phone. They can phone into their channel care support line and then the rep at Telus can email the dealer a copy of the warranty validation page which is required for sending it away for repairs.

I guess you could setup a prepaid Telus SIM if you required warranty service or have a friend with Telus pop in their SIM card on your behalf though it would show the phone being owned by your friend and not you.

Still, no Telus account makes life very difficult if you want to return it for service. Not impossible but very difficult.

Yeah I've suggested popping in a friends sim or getting a prepaid sim before as well. How long does it take for the warranty information to show up in the system when you do that? I always assumed it was almost immediate?

I wish someone would step in and make the warranty process a lot easier than it is today. It's ridiculous that just because I choose to use a Rogers phone on TELUS that I can't get warranty work because I'm not a Rogers customer. I get the phone manufacturers wanting to stay out of the warranty transaction, but I don't understand how the carriers then get away with denying warranty just because you're not a customer. Something has to give. In my opinion it's a carrier responsibility, as the device is branded to them. I may not be a Rogers wireless subscriber, but I'm still a customer in the sense that I purchased their hardware.

In my situation RIM won't help me, and neither will Rogers. Hardly seems fair. Same goes for the OP. It's his phone, and he is aloud to use it on whatever carrier he wants; he should still be entitled to the same warranty coverage as someone who uses the phone on its own network.

If you want to use the phone on wind that must mean that you have to get the phone unlocked. Doing so will void your warrenty if detected.

Why would that void the manufacturer warranty? Why does the manufacturer care which carrier I'm using the phone with. I'm not talking about any telus extended warranty here. I'm am asking about the one year manufacturer limited warranty. If I had bought the phone on best buy for 600 dollar outright, the phone would come unlocked already and I could use it on any carrier, but the manufacturer warranty would still be valid. So why is it different if I unlock the phone myself?

Unlocking the phone won't void the warranty, as you're not affecting the hardware in any way.

Are you sure about that? I know for example if I take phone back to future shop Telus branded and it's unlocked they won't accept the phone for a DOA or return.

Sounds like an overzealous employee if you ask me. Why are they even looking to see if it's unlocked?

I think they are told to on outright sales, been told by others it happened to them as well at best buy.

Phones unlocked with a MEP code will still be covered by warranty. MEP codes that have been entered too many times incorrectly causing the phone to no longer allow for additional attempts could however be denied warranty repair if that's the problem you are trying to get fixed. Entering the code incorrectly too many times on most phones is easy to avoid, every phone I have seen shows a warning and a count down of how many attempts remain when you enter a wrong code.

The manufacturer does not consider a phone properly unlocked with a MEP code to be a reason to deny the warranty. If you have to connect your phone with USB cables to have it unlocked, manually flash a chip to unlock it, modifying the phone OS, or perform any other method besides typing in a code number to unlock the phone then these methods of unlocked could be reasons to deny warranty coverage if the unlocking contributes to the problem you need repaired.

Any dealer who denies warranty coverage because the phone is properly unlocked with a code and the unlocking has nothing to do with the problems requiring service is making up this policy on their own. The warranty is still valid on unlocked phones. Some warranties only cover the original owner though so if the phone is purchased from someone else or your name is not on the original invoice could be a reason to deny coverage depending on the terms of the manufacturer warranty. If you are denied warranty service and attempts to escalate fail you could conceivably sue the dealer in small claims for denying the warranty claim as a last resort.

Unlocking most phones can even be done through Telus now though the cost is far too high. They will give you a code to unlock the phone if you pay. If you were to pay Telus you will get the exact same code as paying a third party for the unlock code. If a dealer told me they were denying the warranty I would just tell them I paid Telus for the fully supported unlock code and point them to the page on the Telus website about unlocking phones.

If the process affected your warranty that website would have to mention it and it says nothing on the subject.

The myth that unlocking the phone will void the manufacturer warranty is a common bit of FUD that the carriers who do not support unlocking are happy to perpetuate. The problem is the carrier is acting as a gatekeeper to the handset manufacturer. The manufacturer would process the warranty, but the gatekeeper is applying rules of their own that are not actually part of the handset warranty. Telus used to be a carrier who did not like unlocking, their dealers may still be confused about this based on old business rules that are no longer valid. Telus loves unlocked phones. The more people who they can get to bring their unlocked phones over to their network the better as it's less cost to them.
