How can I make sure I do not buy a stolen iPhone?

I use a prepaid plan and my actual phone is dying. I do not use my phone much and a used iPhone in good condition would be enough for my needs.

I have seen several 3GS for sale at around $150-$160. How can I make sure I do not buy a stolen phone?

Usually if it comes with the box and all original accessories that would be a pretty good indicator. Those phones are pretty old now so unlikely they would still have the receipt.

I'm not sure there is a way to be totally sure but chances are they aren't stolen since its an older phone and most people selling them are probably upgrading. If you are worried that someone will take it away from you, I doubt that will happen since you don't have to register the iPhone with your provider, you just pop in the sim card and away you go. But do make sure you get a 3GS at least. The 3G is pretty crap on iOS4.

Only purchase from eBay as they offer purchase protection guarantee, meaning if you receive a stolen or broken phone, you will receive a refund.

Also only purchase from sellers with lots and lots of good feedbacks.

AT&T 3GS are fine to buy. But make sure you take out the old sim and wipe the phone data before you leave the seller. Just incase the find my iphone app won't send someone to your door.

Actually I don't see the difference to you when it is stolen or not. Sometimes the stolen ones are sold to the retailers and get it packaged so you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. However, maybe you can ask for the receipt and warranty. Good luck though.

How do you make sure the seller didn't buy the staff. You know they maybe colluded for long cooperation.

Then it won't be a used phone and the price would be much different.
