This is something many iPhone users have yet to experience. Jailbreaking is nothing when compared to what one can do freely (and with Samsung "permission") with a Samsung S2, S3 , Note, Its mind boggling how easy it is to completely make the device your own and completely different form another from the FW to the modem.
The Captivate was indeed a rough start for those of us who came from Nokia N series (although the N97 was rough compared to the N-95). the International i9100 S2 changed the game completely, now the S3 and the Note once again raised the bar,
The phones have become as fluid and developers have made them even better. No central control. Then the International "clean" versions are even better and show up as dumb phones on ATT. WIN?
The Apple ecosystem feeds on itself but i am guessing as soon as the form factor changes and all those peripherals become useless on mew devices, many will have another look at Android and their non propitiatory USB port and open non censored non centralized application installation system. no paid cloud services necessary with up to 120GB on the phones. 64GB interchangeable. 5GB on the cloud is good enough for critical file saving.
Its no wonder Apple is spending millions in lawsuits......They came they conquered open the door to fantastic new technology than proceeded to drop the ball while Samsung/Android took the best parts and made Apple now copy them!
I think the biggest thing that bothers Apple and MS is the OS is based on Linux and it is free and open sourced. That leaves a lot of room for worldwide developers making it better out of a labor of love rather than a handful of cubical engineers for a paycheck. Samsung benefits from all those unpaid "employees" who take their unlocked boot loader devices and make them better.

This seems to be a propitious place and time to ask about the nature and extent of GS series developer support. In Moto oriented threads I have gleaned that Samsung development is more adequate than extensive, would anyone here differ? Is it likely the GSIII will attract greater developer support than its predecessors?

REALLY? well you can Use an alternative browser!! Jeeze..or just download a .exe installer or standalone app to your phone and transfer it. The issue is copying an installed program where you might miss config files, dll files and registry entries. Anything that would work copying to a USB thumb drive should work easily with and Android using your phone as the storage medium. OR just Zip the files.
I never had an unrooted phone nor am i the average users but the Samsung sales are more than proving avg users are favoring them all of a sudden, as sales go up so does Apple lawsuits,

tHE Cyanogen developer Steve Kondik was hired. Cyanogen STILL has independent development, I don't use ASOP ROMS. I like the Samsung stuff and flashing nightlies is a career not a hobbyl Maybe Cyanogen is better on other brands. but samsung has too many great developers to lock into Cyanogen for me, If he incorporates a nice rom into a stock phone all the better, because everything will work unlike now where one has to find asps to make certain things in the hardware work.
I personally think, that Android is good for thos who are very into spending time with technical devices...maybe for developers too! Apple is just simple and handy.
so if you just want a good working phone to have som fun with -> apple
If you are into gimmicks and programming etc -> android
But not everyone can un root their phone. If you have a company issued phone, probably no. That you do it doesn't mean everyone will or can.
What about mobi files? Let's say I have the Kindle app installed and a friend shares a mobi pocket (dot) mobi file via email. Android has no built in support for unrecognized file types. Talk about a nightmare. I don't think Android experience is as smooth as some purport. Especially when unlocking a boot loader is taken for granted and all phones seem to be different regarding their policy on unlocking the boot loader and rooting.
ZIP it and send it
That only works for downloading you are avoiding the email issue. But let's say your friend emails you a mobi file. They don't even think that zipping the file is even necessary since the file is small. Android OS has no support for it and won't accept it, even though you have the Kindle app installed. A download manager won't help. Problem is not solved.
And there is the real problem.......They don;t think. Zipping is not only for making large files small or grouping files. It is also used to change the extension of a file without changing the content. I know Apple users are used to the "nanny" environment but jeeeze a LITTLE thought would solve the "issue"
