iPhone 3gs Weak At&t Signal Problem Solved...Fingers Crossed

Last week I received the ST SIM and while every feature is working great (text, data, MMS, maps, youtube, etc.), my signal strength at home was lousy and giving me lots of dropped calls. So I call up a guy on Craigslist who has a independent cell store. He suggest I try shutting off 3g in settings/networks and wow..I now have 3-4 bars when before I had 1 and sometimes none! If anyone has a weak signal with the At&t SIM, this might help.
Can any of you iphone techies explain how this works? I was ready to sell this iphone as the dropped call issue was really bad...fingers crossed on this simple step.

But now you only have 2G data, which is fine if you have wifi.

Yup, 2G data is better than no data..but wifi is great for home. I'm surprised that the 2G is quick as it is..no problems loading safari and browsing.
