Our store is about 3 blocks from a Walmart so when somebody comes in with a new phone (from Walmart) asking for us to activate it and transfer the contacts I charge them as much as possible. Lots of times they'll leave and say "Well we're not paying that much for it! We'll go to that other one!". In-which case I laugh because they're corporate and all corporate stores around here are required to charge $20 for activation and $10 for transfers.

If someone buys in our store I don't, but if they bought online, from corporate or another agent I charge.

The best metaphor I can think of is imagine going to a mechanic and asking him to change your car's oil, you brought your own oil, and you wanted him to do it for free. Would you be surprised if they charged you for labor? Of course not. You are paying for their time and they need to make a living. I'm no different. Perhaps the confusion is we are clerks paid hourly to take orders and don't have to charge for it if someone is pissed off enough. I don't know...

I think most customers have heard about a fee to transfer contacts enough times that most of them know it is not free. Some just think you're a behind the counter idiot who is going to do them a free favor because transferring contacts is not an inventory item.

We have seen customers ask if they can "use" a charger and bring it back later or charge their phones while they go run an errand and many other insulting requests that they would never ask of anyone else. That type of customer will never be happy and will never ever spend a dollar at your store so waste as little time as possible with them, once they realize you're not an idiot they will never come back to waste your time.
