Verizon Wireless Completes Purchase Of Cellular One Of Northeast Pennsylvania

    03/14/2012

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless today announced it has purchased the operating assets of Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania from United States Cellular Corporation. Financial terms are not being disclosed.

Verizon Wireless will continue to use the Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania brand for the next several months as it works to convert the existing wireless network to Verizon Wireless specifications. Customers do not need to take any action at this time. For now, there are no changes to customers’ calling plans, devices, or service.

“We look forward to expanding our brand presence and network coverage in northeast Pennsylvania and in welcoming Cellular One’s customers to the nation’s most reliable wireless network,” said Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State Region.

The purchase includes Cellular One of Northeast Pennsylvania’s cellular spectrum license and related operations in Wayne and Pike Counties in Pennsylvania. The license covers a population of 114,000. The service area covers the major traffic corridors through northeastern Pennsylvania, including Interstate 84, State Highways 6 and 402. This market serves the Poconos which is a popular summer and winter vacation destination for the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia metro areas, all of which are within a 2 hour drive.

Attractions include numerous mountain lakes for boating and fishing, the largest being Lake Wallenpaupack, as well as a number of ski resorts, camp grounds and over 40 youth summer camps.

Since the company was formed in 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $1.4 billion on improvements to its network in Pennsylvania, and more than $70 billion nationwide, to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.

Finally some real competition for at&t in Wayne & Pike county, PA . Hopefully Verizon will actually put the money into the network to increase the capacity and backhaul needed to keep up during the tourist season.. They will probably have 4G LTE fully rolled out here before at&t gets around to the 3G they have been telling us is coming for years now.

I am curious when Verizon prepaid phones will be able to start using this new coverage area without roaming.

It shouldn't be too long they only have around 23 towers I believe between the 2 counties, plus with the summer coming up I'd think they would want to get this long time trouble spot fixed once and for all, and Verizon already has one tower in Honesdale running 4g LTE.

Now the issues with the network during the summer season either way you figure Verizon has it covered they own the landlines in most of Wayne & Pike for backhaul and they will be able to utilize there 1900 MHz, 1.7/2.1 GHz, & 700 MHz (LTE) spectrum for capacity in addition to the 850 mhz from Cell One.

Good, lets hope so. AT&T is much better than cell one cdma in the area right now. AT&T in general is better those rural areas of PA surprisingly, like Bradford county for example. Miles and miles of GSM with no CDMA to be found outside.

Verizon has already launched 4G LTE in the area. I'm sure they will expand it.
v Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).

Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in Birmingham, AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).^

Speed Test with DSL internet with AT&T(Bellsouth). Horrible.

It'd be great if they had 4G rolled out in the Wayne/Pike footprint by this summer. This merge has been a long time coming

I don't live in PA anymore, and so, don't use I-84 every week but I'll appreciate the (hopeful) 4G for summer when I'm at my aunt & uncle's cabin near Promised Land Lake!
