    Blackberry Simple Mobile plan $50

Hi, regarding the slow internet speeds (ie slowest EDGE), will this affect the timing of pushed emails to the blackberry under the simple mobile blackberry plan??

    Thanks

    Greetings:

I had a T-Mobile branded BlackBerry with OS 7 on the BlackBerry $50 plan for 30 days and I can say that the pushed emails aren't delayed. It's the same as if you were getting pushed emails on a T-Mobile BlackBerry plan with an EDGE only phone.

The main problem of the $50 plan is the false advertising of "Up to 3G" speeds when in reality it's throttled to 119 Kbps (sometimes it will hit 140's).
Everything works fine but just slower...things like email and bbm aren't delayed by much.

Also, there is some issue with data turning off on its own or BIS not turning back on when wifi is disabled after few hours of wifi being on. This can be fixed by turning Mobile Network off and then on or just shutting off the phone and turning it back on. Not sure why it happens, but it happens on both the $50 and $60 plans with BlackBerry on Simple Mobile.

Blackberries are generally more email machines and less web devices then say Android or iphones . Even unlimited data plans are less useful with them because their data/internet/web experience is different from the Ios/Android ones. Email doesn't really vary as much for 2g, 3g or 4g as much as say streaming video does or tethering. I think the $50 Blackberry plan is one of SM's best deals if you have a wifi equipped Berry to compensate for the 120k limit.

And yeah, SM should just say it's 2g speeds already.

Yes indeed and they should also just say 3G speeds for the 4G plan because that 4G plan is also throttled!
On the $50 BlackBerry plan it doesn't make a difference if it isn't a T-Mobile branded 3G BlackBerry because speeds will still be the SAME! Only difference is that with the T-Mobile branded 3G BlackBerry you can talk and use data same time. I found the 119 Kbps speeds very slow to stream video or browse the web.
Emails were fine, I would say the delay is 5-15 seconds in comparison to a 3G plan...not much to notice, the emails weren't an issue for me but the rest was.
Simple Mobile is just not a good option for various reasons such as lying about speeds, data being shut off and turned back on when you call in after a long wait to speak to someone, along with they suspending data if you go over a certain amount - I believe it's 2GB but I will find out for sure this month as I already used up 500 MB's.

    Exactly!
Talk, Text, BIS Email & BBM will all work just fine.
The only times things will be delayed for you is when sending/receiving pictures/videos on the text, email or BBM.

But it's perfectly fine if you're not big on browsing or streaming or downloading anything major.
Videos will buffer like crazy and not even worth wasting your time viewing them on the throttled $50 plan.
For that you can leave for when you have wifi available.
If you want to save up and pay $50 then it's fine. If you're offended by Simple Mobile lying about their speeds and feel you must have speeds then stay away from them. For me the $50 plan nor their $60 plan isn't suitable on a brand new T-Mobile branded BlackBerry which I expect to be able to get more out of then my previous old BlackBerry with Sprint postpaid.

Will Virgin Mobile allow you to use a different phone other than the 8530?
Simple Mobile's $50 plan ($47.50 after discount on Calling Mart) is a better option in my opinion because you can bring your own BlackBerry, say a Curve 9360 or Bold 9900, whereas I believe Virgin Mobile will only allow you to use the Virgin Mobile branded 8530. For only a few more dollars you get unlimited talk and text instead of 1200 that Virgin offers. Does Virgin provide BIS on the $45 plan? That's also something you need to find out.

Ask around what Virgin Mobile BlackBerry customers are getting in terms of speed or what Virgin Mobile users are getting in general in terms of speed. On Simple Mobile $50 plan you will get 120 Kbps with it hitting 140's sometimes...so don't go into the plan expecting to reach 200 kbps or more.

The only thing to watch out for is that Simple Mobile won't support certain BlackBerries say you have trouble.
For ex: The Curve 9360 is listed on their website under phones but then when you hit the BlackBerry plan and click on compatible devices it isn't listed and therefore when you call in for their technical support team they will just say - we can't promise web on that phone because it isn't a supported phone. Even though it will definitely work with BIS service.

Simple Mobile is fine if you don't want good customer service, don't care for fast speeds, and don't mind that they lie about it being unlimited.

The problem is Danny, is that SM has fudged info before. Their original "unlimited" data plan (at that time 3g) was actually a gig or two (depending on who you asked) . Now it's not just quantity but speed. I'd say if they are giving unlimited 3g level data on $60 plan, it may be a tradeoff with the 2gb 4g level speeds on Tmo's sixty dollar plan but again, if they cap it, what's the point.

SM at $40 beats any Att mvno because of the data but unless you're using 1)Feature phone 2)Old school 2g smartphone 3) unlocked non Tmo phone, this plan gets beaten by Straight Talk...

You're right about Simple Mobile not offering any advantage over T-Mobile on the $60 plan.
The only thing I can think of that they give that T-Mobile doesn't is the international texting and international calling. T-Mobile has roaming, wifi calling, unlimited data with throttle (no suspending of data), and better customer service. I called up T-Mobile to find out about the 3 way calling and they said it's included on their prepaid plans so that' something that Simple Mobile recently added but has been around with T-Mobile already.

The problem with Simple Mobile is that the 4G plan only gives 3G speeds which would be a bargain if it was truly unlimited. But in actuality, there is a cap from what people are stating. Do you know if the cap is 1 GB or 2 GB? I will definitely find out this month as I'm streching it as far as I can with data until they shut me off.

The $40 plan definitely beats any mvno out there even with the 119 Kbps speeds, for some the $5 difference with Straight Talk isn't worth faster speeds. Like you've stated numerous times, the beauty of prepaid is that you can try out a company and take your business elsewhere to someone who you seem fit for your own personal needs of usage, data limit, data speeds, coverage, etc.

If you allow me to share my opinion... I think it's better to go with a company that uses GSM phones. The BlackBerry 8530 with Virgin Mobile is a CDMA phone. I actually had the exact same phone with Cricket but ended up going with Simple Mobile and buying an unlocked BlackBerry Pearl 9100. Using GSM phones (the ones with SIM cards) is an advantage because you can change your phone as often as you like, and you can use the same phone with different companies (given that they're compatible).

I now have an HTC phone (originally an AT&T phone) and using Simple Mobile's $40 plan.

    Good luck!

Your opinion is helpful. I'm trying to spend the least for blackberry service as my galaxy nexus will be my play phone. I like a blackberry keyboard to crank out email and work related texts.

I don't even see BlackBerry being offered on Virgin Mobile's website.
I thought their BlackBerry service was only offered for the $55 plan, did you check with them if they allow BlackBerry activation on the lower plan?

I personally don't like cdma for prepaid, the fact that you're dependent on whether they will allow a specific phone and have to call in to do an ESN change is enough of a turnoff for the freedom you're suppose to get with prepaid. Everyone has their own preference but for me it's all about GSM, either AT&T or T-Mobile...considering the two actually work the best in where I live so it's not a bad choice.

You'll be happy with the Simple Mobile $50 BlackBerry plan, only downfall is the 2G speeds - everything else seemed legit...the service was identical to T-Mobile and phone worked everywhere.
You might also want to check out Sprint service is in your area. Also, Virgin Mobile will be providing you even worst speeds than Simple Mobile as some users have been reporting.

It doesn't allow me to edit anything on here.
Anyway, what I meant by checking out Sprint service is actually finding out how the coverage is in your area with Sprint before going with Virgin Mobile as they provide Sprint native coverage.
If Sprint service is lousy in your area then Virgin Mobile would definitely not be a good option for you.

I'm reporting on here that it seems that the BlackBerry data on Simple Mobile going OFF on its own once to twice a day has been resolved.

It's been two days now and my BlackBerry Internet Service hasn't turned off even once and I haven't had to toggle Mobile Network On/Off to fix that issue like when it was happening. The problem was mainly when the phone was connected to WiFi for a period of more than a few hours and then when you turn off WiFi or leave the area that has WiFi the data just won't work at all thus requiring a phone reboot, power on/off, or turning off the mobile network and back on.

It seems that Simple Mobile has fixed the issue and I don't know if it was happening on all BlackBerries or only some particular models but it was happening to me for 45 days straight since I got Simple Mobile on both the $50 and $60 plans.
