iPhone 3g vs any Straight Talk Phone out of the box.. Opinions?
Hi all,
I've been teetering toward switching from boost mobile for a while, and now that I've discovered Straight Talk, I've decided it's actually time to take action. It seems to be the clear choice when it comes to providers.
Here's my situation:
I have access to my girlfriend's old iPhone 3g (8gig) basically for free (yes, it's from AT&T, so it should work with straight talk). I'm wondering how the iPhone 3g stacks up against the best Straight talk phone out of the box. I think the iPhone would cover my needs, but it's 4 years old, and I don't want to limit myself with an out of date device. Additionally, I am a bit hesitant to go through all the workarounds to get the iPhone working on the ST signal. I don't doubt my ability to perform the task, but I wonder about limitations that might come with using a non ST phone.
How does the iPhone stack up against the best ST phone currently available? Money isn't too much an issue(although I don't think I'd be willing to splurge on a iPhone 4 Unless you convince me...). I just want to make sure I end up with the best phone possible without having to constantly deal with a plethora of workarounds. (When I first signed up for Boost, I had a hacked Blackberry and I wasn't impressed with the performance.)
What would you recommend? Is there an alternative that you would suggest? (Also, http://www.straighttalksim.com/ is legit, right? It seems tooo easy!)
The iPhone is a whole different breed of phone (even the aging 3G), compared to Straight Talk's offerings. Not much you have to do in the way of workarounds, unless MMS is a big deal for you. My opinion/advice is to go with the 3G. It is not only free, but way better than the stuff ST has.

Reason: Typo
Buy the ST AT&T BYOD SIM (yes it is legit/and easy) and get the 3g up and running. That SIM has the ST service on it and can be instantly moved to another I-phone or Android (just set the APN for ST to get data) at any time you decide you are tired of the 3G.
I'd take an iPhone 3G in a heartbeat over any of ST's phone offerings. It may be aging but it is still a very capable device. Heck I see folks still using the original iPhone! (albeit less as time goes by)
I use my iphone 3gs on ST and get all features. I popped in the SIM and had talk and text running in 30 seconds..however, to get data going, I downloaded the app APN (unlockit.co.nz) it works great. Check to see if Att has good coverage in your area since I found that ATt has poor coverage in my area. This is my first Apple phone and it's nice, but I still prefer android for more freedom and access of apps. The new Optimus Black will be my next ST phone as the specs look great and want a 4" high resolution screen vs iphone 3/3gs low resolution. If any problems with ST, use their FaceBook page for help, good c/s there.
