This gets confusing. Do i understand that there's no theoretical reason it can't be unlocked ie, nothing unique about my baseband? And only one person has the knowledge to do it?

If you know how to exploit holes in the bb and can come up with software to exploit it, you could come up with an unlock. The problem is most computer people just don't have that talent and dedication. It's sort of the difference between a 12th grade violinist and a member of the London symphony.
There are people with the ability, but no one else has stepped forward to work for the dev team. Also, these people can make more money finding exploits for profit (e.g., gevey sim).

Thanks. For future information, how do I backup the baseband? Thanks

You preserve (you can't backup) your bb with custom firmware made by pwnage or redsnow's newer versions.
Luckily, AT&T is now unlocking phones that have finished their 2 year contract. If you have an old iphone that was on contract, you should be able to unlock. Call cs for details.

Thanks. What does preserve mean? I'm guessing that you somehow prevent the bb from being updated when updating the iOS? Our contract expires in a few months so hopefully it will be easy to get it unlocked.

You pretty much got it. The bb, once it changes, can't downgrade. That's why I don't like to use backup. It's confusing for newbies.
From the early reports I've heard, it's easier to unlock if the phone's still active on the line. So before you upgrade, get the phone unlocked.
Since the next iphone probably won't be out until fall, I'll have an official unlock from at&t before the new one comes out (my contract finishes around the end of July).

While that works for you, I bought my phone from at&t and haven't required a replacement. I imagine there's a portion of the population in my situation.

AT&T is now doing it for customers. if anyone has access to this and is willing to sell in volume, please let us know. We do about 100 a day and would love to work with a dealer who has access to unlock these fast.

Only AT&T can do it. You might get a reply from someone inside AT&T's unlocking dept to do it for you on the side, but they'd probably lose their jobs pretty quickly.
Unlocked iPhone 5, unlocked iPhone 4
Unlimited airtime, Unlimited CAN/US long distance, Unlimited SMS to CAN/US wireless numbers
2500 Call Forwarding minutes to CAN/US numbers
    CiD, 6GB
Google Voice for visual voice mail with message transcription, conditional greetings, unlimited messages (vs 35 message cap), remote retrieval from any PC or phone, no auto-purge after 10 days and most importantly no $7-$8 charge.

It'd be better to get access to apple's servers anyway. AT&T only sends the request to apple. They can't actually do the unlock.

AT&T just agreed to authorize the unlock of my phone (17 days before contract expiration). Unfortunately, their recommended procedure requires that I do a restore to factory default condition which automatically updates iPhone software to V5.1.1. I'm currently at V5.1 and wish not to update it in case I want to do a jailbreak down the road. Any ideas how to unlock the phone without doing the factory restore?

I do not think you can unlock without doing the factory/restore.
