My screen is bigger than yours
Verizon confirmed to a blog today that you can take your unlimited data plan, and move it from a smartphone over to a tablet or hotspot. They cited the new iPad and MiFi, but it l will work with any Verizon LTE device.
For example, put your Smartphone SIM card into an LTE Xyboard, and forward calls to a Page Plus phone. You now have unlimited data on your tablet with 4G LTE... and your calls go to cheap prepaid on the Verizon network (Page Plus uses Verizon).

Ever heard of the Xoom?
Factory OEM unlock of the bootloader and mine runs ICS just fine.
Oh, and the LTE radio outperforms most or all phones because it doesn't need to maintain 1X voice connectivity.
Is it the best tablet on the market? Probably not, but it meets all of the prerequisites you mentioned and can be had very cheaply these days.

Thanks. Yes, I'm very uninformed about tablets. Hadn't looked into that option because I was thinking phone atw. Now, if I can port the unlimited data for half the cost of a capped tablet plan, it's a whole new ball game.
Is the Xoom fairly well supported by the development community?

Two of my TeamBlackHat cohorts just picked up a Xoom last week. One went with the Wifi only model and the other went with the LTE version after confirming with me that the SIM would transfer readily from his Bionic to the Xoom.
Both paid $300 for used units in excellent shape and are very happy.
If you really want to learn about Android and how it works, then the Xoom is an excellent choice and the development is very mature and still vital and ongoing.
Setup an Ubuntu box and compile your own build. Discover the freedom of voiding your warranty with the OEM unlock and manage the device yourself!

Again, thanks. That sounds very doable for me. Is there a good KB dock setup? And can I tether with the Xoom using the sim? My "box" is RHEL (via Centos) atm. But I've been thinking Ubuntu.
I'm rural w/o cable so tethering is a major concern.

Yes and yes, and compiling AOSP is actually pretty resource intensive so you need a fairly beefy setup to do it, but you can run Ubuntu in a VM on a Windows PC and it works well provided you have enough RAM to allocate to the VM and enough disk space for the build environment to accommodate the source repository.
Think on the order of 4GB RAM minimum and 100GB of hard disk space including a swap partition for ccache.
Really though, you want to just get the device and start learning about it first before you dive in to compiling.
The point is, if you are going to proclaim devotion to open source and "vanilla" Android, then your options are actually fairly limited, but they are there for you if you are willing to make the commitment to learn about it.

Sounds fun! Actually, I was a programmer in a previous incarnation. Started in Autocoder on a 2k -- real magnetic "cores") -- IBM 1401. Left while CICS was new tech.
And I think I already have a good lead on an LTE Xoom.

OK, I have googled around enough to convince myself that it is not going to be quick or easy to figure out if the LTE Xoom with ICS currently supports the SD Card fully or not.
Anyone know the answer?
