Rooting is almost as painful as the unlock.
Android has made Japanese phones only a tiny bit more accessible to those outside of Japan; Docomo's phone are now unlocked, but without a root, they are still handicapped.

hmm.. it seems that shbreak 1.8 is out.. nothing much different... these are the temp root steps with superuser enabled, i guess everyone should know this already..
I have only tried it on 007sh and it works fine so far,
1.install shbreak 1.8 from http:[slash][slash]marijuana.ddo.jp/is01/index.php?moddir=downloads&action=visit&cid=3&lid= 44
2.install istweak from http:[slash][slash]marijuana.ddo.jp/is01/index.php?moddir=downloads&action=visit&cid=3&lid= 45
3.open shbreak, select break2, (it will close the application)
4.open shbreak again, select copy au (it seems that you can execute root commands in the android terminal, haven't tried it yet, will try it now)
5.now open Istweak, choose enable su(enable superuser, which gives you the superuser privilege)
now you have a temp-root until reboot(tested with apps that requires su, such as titanium backup and busybox,(though titatnium backup crashed a few times before successfully opening it), and of course you could use any root explorer to browse the system file and if you discover something RELATED to unlock, share em!![]()
Again, limited by the language barrier, I kinda discovered something else about this whole Root matter.
It turns out that there is an app called "Root Toolbox" and is compatible with the 003SH. You need root permisions first, but lets assume that the temp-root discovered is enough.

This is what caught my attention:
I don't really understand what it says, but it appears "SIM" and different carriers that are not Softbank. What does it mean?. Can you select your carrier from that app or what?.
It says you need to reboot the phone if you've changed the phone's area (location?) on the top. Not sure what the button below that says.
The 'xx sim xxx' text in the middle button is basically for resetting the sim card settings. Resetting the APN settings maybe?
The two lines of text below that says don't press the below buttons unless there's a problem.
iPhone 5 [64GB|Black] | HTC One X LTE | NTT docomo N-06C
I thought the last 2 characters for the first button were familiar - they are almost the same as 市場 which means Market in Japanese.
The following review of Root toolbox shows a similar screen (second row of images, right side). Doesnt have the reset sim settings, but the explanation of this feature is that it allows you to launch the market with different SIM settings:

I can almost smell the unlock.
Oh well, this is better than the 904SH days![]()
On the 2CH thread they are all about overclocking. Seems the 003SH is able to run at 2.0Ghz
I've asked several times but they keep passing over it, and discussing ramzswap, overclocking and other useless features.
Yes obviously you need temporary root. At least for the 005SH and 003SH, they have been able to unlock the NAND and put a recovery loader in there.
I think there should be others that want root here. Most of the guys messing with this phone now arent using SB Sims anymore - they are dedicated experimental phones (often talking about having more than one). For them (and me) it would be handy to have it unlocked so i can use a B-Mobile, or other MNVO SIM for data only.
You should check out this SIM, tokyo_dom https://www.iijmio.jp/
Nice! Always a bit sus ordering a network service from a company who's website looks like it is in a timeslip from 1997, but i guess that describes most Japanese webpages.
Now just to get my phone unlocked and i will be on that for sure!
