Real Wi-Fi tethering - easy, no root required

Good news! Want Wi-Fi tethering on your Japanese Android? Read on:

    1. Install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...android&rdot=1 (Show default windows)

    2. Run it.

    3. You will see a black menu with a million options (exploration due, might even contain SIM locking stuff)

    4. Scroll down till you see a looooong list of "Settings".

    5. On the 005SH, it's the SIXTH "Settings" option. It's pretty straightforward from here on.

This should work with other phones too - the original post was for 007SH, and it is possible this is available for other brand phones too

Ok, with a bit more playing around, i can CONFIRM that this works (i.e. i was able to use internet) using the 007SH as the wireless hotspot.
However on my 005SH, the Access Point settings are greyed out, and when selecting the Portable Wifi Hotspot checkbox it comes back with an error message (no details). The 005SH is still on Android 2.2 though, Whereas the 007SH is 2.3.3.
Cheeseus' 005SH is on 2.3.3, and he was able to use it as well, so it might be only available from 2.3 onwards - if anyone else wants to test this it would be appreciated.

Another vital point, which at first had me stumped was the fact that the APN on the phone providing the tethering must be configured to allow tethering. If not, you will get "Limited Connection" on the connecting device, and no internet access.
    http://www.podrezo.com/?r=howto/android-tether
This page describes how the APN must have type "dun" (short for dial-up networking) in its APN Type. Not surprisingly the Softbank APN doesnt have this, so i made a new APN (copying the SB settings), and added "dun" to the list in APN Type: "default, mms, supl, hipri, dun".
That page seems to indicate you dont need to select the APN, but i did just in case

    Result:

Pretty cool option to have available!

There's an option for "Set Up sim card lock" I wonder what that does.

    It's all good (^_^)

I don't get it, didn't the phones already have wifi tethering available in the menus? (I only used DoCoMo Sharp Sh-03C - no tethering, and SH-13C - tethering available. And AU Digno ISW11K also has tethering available.)

Ah, yes on Docomo maybe, and AU the phones with Wimax definitely. But not any of the Softbank ones. Softbank HATES tethering

Sadly, it's not what we all wish it were. It's setting whether the phone should ask you to enter the SIM's PIN or not.

Any of you guys doing this on the softbank network? If so, do they charge extra for it? Can they even find out if you don't exxagerate?

Was planning to use my international galaxy note as a hotspot for my android tablet. Then I can cancel my wiimax. It starts to add up, all those mobile data plans

Hard to see in the pics, but i am on Softbank. I only tried it the other day, so i will check my bill at the end of the month.

According to what i read on the net, providers cant tell you are tethering when you use Android (unlike iPhone). But will see. I only tried using a tiny bit, in case it isnt covered

I can do wi-fi tethering on the same phone and they told me as long as it works, it's free.
Is it since I'm on GB?

Just as an update to this, i found another application that lets you create a shortcut directly to the tethering settings, which can be put on the desktop for easy access:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...d.anycut&hl=en

Anycut lets you create a shortcut to any activity on your device (somewhat cool in its own right). Long press anywhere on your launcher, select "New shortcut" and then select Anycut. From the next screen, select Activity and then after a bit of a wait, you get the massive list of activities that the previous app had (perhaps more!).

Scroll down to the multiple "settings" items, and it should be the same one that was identified in the previous app (6th item in the case of 005SH, 7th for the 007SH). Select a name for it (eg "Tethering Settings"), and voila! Shortcut to tethering on your launcher

I can't get this to work on my 003sh. I get to the wi-fi hotspot menu, set it up, and then click the check box to enable the hotspot, and it just says "error" after a few seconds.
I am currently using 2.3.4, Maybe I need to be using 2.3.3?
Do I need to set up and use a different APN before trying to enable the hotspot? or was this exploit fixed in 2.3.4....
Any help would be appreciated, I am seriously thinking of changing to AU or Docomo mainly because of tethering.

Actually, i cant get it working on my 005SH either (same error as you). But it works on the 007SH with the same SIM.
