My sister's iphone 4 suddenly has no "external" sound at all. Ringtones, notifications or music/videos all have no sound (not crackling as if the speaker blew, etc). 2 hard reboots and double checking all the profile volume settings later, no luck. Any suggestions?

I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

You checked the volume settings, but did you hit manually the volume buttons on the side? And check to make sure he mute switch is not flipped? You probably checked all these but just thought it was worth making sure

How ironic, my Mom just reported the same issue on her iPhone 4 this morning. After I saw your post, I asked her for her phone and the mute switch was off. After turning it back on, problem solved. I imagine it could be the same issue for the OP. Thanks for the suggestion.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

Thanks to this thread, I solved the problem on my iPad. Darned mute switch! No sound on any of my games but I knew speakers were working because music and you tube were fine. I was going nuts trying to figure it out.
Personal Phone: iPhone 4 on AT&T
Work Phone: Blackberry Tour (9630) on Verizon
And would it be so hard for Apple to add a "Speaker muted" icon?
They do. Just adjust the volume level. The icon is dead center of the screen. The iPhone and iOS is capable of multiple audio output options besides speaker and headphones. Maybe carrying over the same audio output icons that Mac OS has would be very useful to users distinguish their audio setup.

They do. the audio icon when you mute or adjust volume on a mac is literally exactly the same white speaker icon that you see on the phone, and it appears under exactly the same circumstances too.
Let me be more specific. I'd like to see an icon on the status bar that shows me that the Ring/Silent ("Mute") switch is in the "silent" position. Being unaware that the R/S switch had been moved to "silent" is the problem reported by two posters in this thread, and may have been the OP's problem, too.

It's easily rectified by looking at the side of the phone, or slightly tilting the phone right a bit to see the switch. If the switch is down, there is a little orange indicator that indicates mute. If the switch is up, it is un-muted.
