iPhone 3Gs Setup - Step by Step

Sorry if this post is unwelcome here. I had a lot of help from everyone here & wanted to share my experience FINALLY getting data & MMS to work on my 3Gs. The wiki that is currently posted didn't work for me (because of ST settings, I believe) so here it goes.

1) Got my iPhone 3Gs from a friend. It was updated to iOS 5.1., discovered I couldn't downgrade without a lot of nonsense.

2) Cry a little because friend was "trying to help" by updating it, thinking I'd go to AT&T.

3) Jailbreak using redsn0w 0.9.10b6

4) Install Cydia

5) Add http://cydia.xsellize.com to sources.

6) Install TetherMe 2.3-9

7) Reboot tethered (using redsn0w)

8) TetherMe shows up in settings:


9) Under APN selection, switch "Automatic" to OFF. Then click "Cellular Data Network"



10)For Celluar Data - APN put in att. mvno



11) scroll down to MMS, put in:
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com:80
MMS Max Message Size: 104857




12) Reboot using redsn0w

That's what worked for me. Data & MMS now work (I tested by sending out some photos). Hope it works for you!

Does this apply to Apple iPhone 4s users too? I have an AT&T Apple iPhone 4s on hand.

very good write up and worked fine on my 3g, however after entering the mms proxy and rebooting i got a strange text message from yesterday from a # I dont know... the message is a story that makes no sense... going to look into this as i think i may not trust this version of tether me... if anyone else gets 1 please post.

I followed this perfectly, including using the redsn0w version specified even though there is a newer one available and the MMS works but now if the phone boots normally, my mail or most internet apps won't work, but if I boot thethered using redsn0w they do work. Any ideas anyone?

When you boot untethered can you get into Cydia? If not then you have an untethered jailbreak it sounds like. I'm not sure about the different iOS versions on the 3GS versus the different versions of redsn0w no but I should think that there is an untethered jailbreak available for you. Go read the dev team's blog and grab the latest red snow and see if it has an untethered jailbreak update.

If you have a tethered jailbreak your problem makes a little bit of sense because the things it needs to do require the jailbreak to be active. If you have a tethered jailbreak and you didn't boot tethered the jailbreak code is not active and any components that you had installed through Cydia will not work.

Any advice for 3g Free fixing MMS--like,

Here is a tip to enable tethering for free:

1) Download MyWi during the free trial and install it.
2) After you install it and it reboots, make sure that tethering is now enabled in the network settings section.
3) Using Cy Delete or Cydia, uninstall MyWi and reboot the device
4) The USB and Bluetooth settings for tethering will still be enabled but the whole creating a WIFI hotstop function will be uninstalled and you now have free tethering

Paying is great but free is better. No hacking or stealing involved. Its all legal. Enjoy

Well it costs money because it's useful software and some developer not involved with Apple spent a lot of time creating it.

The real WTF here is this should work on the phone itself and it doesn't. These are all workarounds for things that should work on the phone. Everyone annoyed at this should let Apple know.

thats true, but that may just cause apple to put more pressure on straight talk to stop our phone from working no>?

Why do they care? They sold another phone and I really high markup didn't they? Apple is the only one out there really going against the carriers at the moment.

I jail broke using sn0wbreeze, and the phone is very unstable, reboots at random so often I spend more time booted in a not jail broken state. Also a iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.1. Thanks for the guide, I may try using this method, even though I would guess the essential jail break is the same.
