Okay I have my sim card and my new iphone 3gs and am going to attempt to get it working. Not sure that I understand it all, but am just going to try to follow each step and see what happens. I'll be back with questions or a report.

BTW, thanks to everyone on these forums. I've been with ST for over a year, really wanted a smart phone but it was out of the budget until this came along. I really appreciate the instructions, experiences, reports, etc. Without everyone on here I would not be attempting this.

Noob here, I have a clean AT&T iPhone 3GS, waiting for sim card.
Do I have to do this procedure to get data and mms to work?
Can I do these steps before I receive the sim card?

    Success!
Took less than 15 minutes for my number to port from my existing Straight Talk phone to the sim card. Voice calls were working. Probably took me 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get everything up and running. I followed the steps here except I skipped step #5 because I couldn't figure out where I was supposed to put that. I also used the Wiki mentioned in post #6 and a page I found when I did a search for Redsn0w for additional details in following the steps. I am not tech saavy and was very nervous doing all of this but I managed to get through it all. Had a couple of minor problems caused by my own errors & had to redo things a couple of times but finally got it all figured out. Phone has been thoroughly tested throughout the weekend and everything is working.

Thanks again for all the info. This would have been impossible for me without this forum. I will be happy to answer any questions on my experience if it helps someone.

Now a couple of questions to keep my phone working . . .

Do I understand correctly that I should not turn my phone off or it will revert back to old settings? Also that I should not install any updates that may come along from Apple?

Anything else I should know to keep everything working?

Humm, with my 3GS, I sent a email to At&t asking for the unlock. Two days later, I download in iTUnes and bingo..it's unlocked. I insert either a ST SIM or a T-Mo (genuine T-Mo, not ST) and get ALL features working on both SIMS..including MMS! Is not a At&t unlock much simpler than all of these work arounds? Btw, my 3GS is os version 5.0.1 if that matters. Btw, iTunes stores the unlock so in the event I ever need to replace the phone, I can download and I'm good.

Ok first off thanks to all that will answer any questions I post here......love this forum. Anyways I am in sort of same boat as pixiesnake....I am not tech savy but trying hard to figure this out as well. Ok here is my deal.

I have a 3gs that I figured out has a new bootrom number....now with that said I used the new absinthe program to jailbreak my phone and I did install the tetherme app.....everything has been working great for 4 or 5 days, then my phone unexpectadly shut down for some reason and I lost it all.....I hooked my phone back up to my computer and resynced it with itunes and then jailbreak again using absinthe to be able to reapply the tetherme app. So this is where I need your alls input and help.

Should I be jailbreaking my phone with redsnow? or does it not matter that I used the latest absinthe(greenpoison) jailbreak?

Will powering off my phone cause me to loose cydia and the tetherme app? if so this will only distrupt the ability to send pics in MMS but I will still have data and the ability to text and make calls correct?

If I use unlockitz.....I dont ever have to worry about the phone being shut down, I can call, use data and text....I just wont be able to send pics through MMS correct?

Pixie Snake: If you have done the tethered jailbreak (like I did in the tutorial) and you restart your phone, you will lose the jailbreak. You will have to use redsnow or another program to "just boot" once connected to the computer.

Do not install updates from apple. Once there is a new jailbreak available (there might be one now) for the newer updated apple software, you can do the apple updates, and then use that new jailbreak to use your phone again.

Blah 333: You can use whatever jailbreak app works best for you. I think there's an untethered one (absinthe) available now - but I am sticking with the tethered jailbreak I have now because it is working for me. I don't' have a great need to be untethered at the moment.

If your phone restarts, you will still be able to make calls and send SMS. This happened to me last month & I had to wait a few days to get home to reboot with redsnow.

I don't know anything about unlockitz. When I tried to use it, it never worked. I was interested in sending MMS, so I avoided anything that did NOT allow me to do that.

I advise you wait for the sim card. I don't think you'll be able to get past the first screen on the phone if you don't have a sim...

Ok at the top you said if you turn off phone you will have to just boot using whatever program.....sorry can you explain that to me? When i turned off my phone i lost everything and could not open cydia.....so what i did was restored the phone, then jailbroke it again for cydia then downloaded tetherme again......is there an easier way?? Sorry im new to all this....but when i restore the phone through itunes it looks for new updates, and i dont want to do this......what do i need to do ?

the program that you use to jailbreak should have a "just boot" option - redsnow does.

Once you have done the jailbreak, installed cydia & tetherme, then whenever you need to reboot, you turn off your phone, plug it into the computer, open up redsnow and use the "Just boot" option.

You don't need to keep restoring the phone using itunes. If you lose your jailbreak, just jailbreak it again using redsnow.

Absinthe is an untethered jailbreak, reboot the phone and it is still jailbroken and jailbroken apps still work.

ok everyone please explain this to me........after downloading absinthe and not seeing a just boot button anywhere I basically hooked up my phone to computer and Itunes to reboot and restore phone wanted to get rid of absinthe and download redsnow application.......I then go back in and download redsnow and follow all directions....success.....everything is running as it should.......now here is where it gets weird, I POWERED OFF the phone to test it and to JUST BOOT it with redsnow, but say to myself check things first.....I tap cydia to see if it opens...nothing(cant get in).......I go into settings and tetherme section is gone.....I then send a MMS with pic.....it works...WTF!? I then Just boot with redsnow, I can access cydia again, and I have the tetherme section in settings again......send MMS with pic.....again it works

DID I Royally screw up somewhere along the line? I thought that after powering OFF my phone I wasnt going to be able to send pics in text till I JUST BOOTED the phone
