iPhone 5 (Speedwise) on Straight Talk?

Hey guys i wasn't trying to mislead anyone on the title but i was curious if iPhone 5 comes out and its a 4G speed one. Will it work OK on Straight Talk? I don't care about getting 4G speeds so much but if i don't get 4G will i still get 3G though?

For the time being, all the new phones coming out will have 3G capability. The 4G network is still in it's infancy and is not available in most areas for AT&T, hence the reason why all of their phones will have to be able to use 3G service.....otherwise you would always lose service as a contract customer.

My buddy has an iPhone 4S on ST and his phone displays a "4G" icon when connected via HSPA+

iPhone5/iPhone4GS/The NEW iPhone/whatever stupid name Apple gives it will almost certainly have LTE support.

It's very doubtful that AT&T would allow prepaid customers to use the LTE network as they need a carrot to get people to commit to a contract.

Its a pretty strong rumored phone to be out next by Apple i believe. I didn't buy it i was just asking about the 4G capability since its now apparently going to have it.

Right. So this thread is purely speculation atm.

So far, no one has reported that LTE works using Straight Talk's AT&T SIM. Whether or not the next iPhone has LTE is an entirely different subject that is best served asking in the iPhone section (it has nothing to do with Straight Talk).

Exactly right. The "4G" reported by others on ST is actually just enhanced 3G. Like I said before, if the iphone 5 comes out and has LTE 4G you won't get that on ST, but you will get the enhanced 3G.

So iPhone LTE will work on non-LTE ST sim cards?

Verizon LTE phones need a LTE sim card to get the phone activated even if your area doesn't have the LTE service! Just something to look out for when iPhone LTE comes out in September :P

Since we're talking Verizon, I would fully expect their LTE phones to be SIM locked.

Some fun conjecture here.... Likely it will have faux G (hspa+) and work well on ST. ST will likely not carry LTE in the near future, but from some of the ATT speeds I've seen on devices such as the NITRO (which have hspa+ and LTE) it should work well. FFF should have the LTE radios as well (will be interesting to see what happens with the TMO version if they get it, as they are sticking with hspa+ on steroids rather than going the LTE or other technologies. Will it be a value proposition for people other than fashionistas when you can't utilize LTE on ST? Probably not; but it would be fun to play with and would look cool at Starbucks to some people.

Bottom line is you can get 4G HSPA on the ST AT&T SIMs, but you definitely won't get 4G speeds. Speeds max out around 7.5mbps (I would call it upper end of 3G speeds) while an iPhone 4S can reach 10-12mbps on a good (upgraded) tower with good signal.

If the iPhone 5 for AT&T has LTE, you'll still be able to use it on ST but only on the 4G HSPA network. It just won't connect to the LTE network. This is just like with any current AT&T LTE phone, it connects to 2G, 3G (UMTS), 4G (HSPA) just fine.
