It depends on how much data you are using at a time. If you don't abuse it you should be cool

Unlimited does always come with compromises on data but those compromises involve: 1. throttling 2. a slow network to begin with 3. overage charges (on Verizon postpaid & AT&T postpaid) or 4. a HARD cap in which data (and only data) is shutoff until the next cycle begins.
These are all seen as reasonable compromises with the exception to those who have grandfathered postpaid accounts in which they were under the impression that throttling will never occur.
These customers don't get booted and lose their service and number though.
Straight Talk is the only company to suspend your service completely, boot you off, and not hold unto your # forcing you to lose it.
Even when other mvno's didn't want to give service to a customer for overuse, they still gave them the option to keep using the phone until the month is over and allow a porting to take place.
What Straight Talk is doing is absurd!

Yes I'm in NYC. Using Straight Talk micro sim card on iPhone 4 and a new BlackBerry on Simple Mobile's $60 unlimited plan. Porting the BlackBerry over to T-Mobile in 2 weeks to see if the data speeds are different.
Have used around 600 MB's on the Straight Talk for the whole month.
Up to 1200 MB's on Simple Mobile so far in only 2 weeks of use (I been using it for most of my music streaming) and haven't had any issues. Only problem with Simple Mobile is that their speeds are slower than T-Mobile from what I can assess so far. Straight Talk on the other hand is the same speeds that AT&T postpaid is giving for the iPhone from several tests that I've ran with people who have AT&T.
That is one of the best features of an ATT iphone on Straight Talk - you get the same data speeds ATT iphone customers get at the crazy discount monthly rate, which is awesome. I was on T-Mobile on a 4g android phone for a while, and speeds were good, but I've been wanting an iphone forever. Thought about doing an unlocked on TMO but never bit because of being restricted to Edge speeds. The ST plan is perfect for me - get the iphone with legit iphone speeds, and save money.
Unfortunately it certainly is true. There have been quite a few users who reported their service was terminated. Here is one recent thread:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...-data-limit%29
Yeah I saw the thread. I know it happens, I guess I was asking more about how they can get away with it rather than, 'are they really doing it'?
And even though I get it and will live with it, whatever, but still - the others advertising 'unlimited' data get away with it via loopholes like throttling, etc. ST is blatantly lying by offering "unlimited data". Sure, they tell you about the restrictions in the T&C, but it's still false advertising. It'd be like me posting online "First one to come to my place can walk away with my mac for 10 bucks." Then when someone shows up, I'm like "Ok, you can have it for 20 minutes, and it'll cost you $50." Haha, lame analogy, but you get the point.
ST isn't shady, imo. If you want shady, look at At&T. I love ST.
I don't think ST is unreasonable as far as data usage goes, 2GB is per month is prefectly fine. What is ridiculous is that they terminate your number/service instead of just cutting off data... that's absurd. If you go over the cap they should cut your data off untill your next billing cycle not terminate you account. I've had the service since 03/12 and I've only used ~350MB data, and since I'm mostly connected to wifi I'll rarely go over 1GB, but i have to constantly keep checking my phone for rogue apps that might eat up my data plan in fear of losing my number. I find that ridiculous.
Like buying gas, advertising cheaper gas then find out the price is when you get a car wash. WTF, I hate false or misleading advertising. This ST deal should say includes 2GB data, not unlimited. Yep, unlimited Internet, I get it, data is added up with the same math, 2GB total is 2 GB, that is still the cut off whether you are streaming music, watching YouTube, or surfing the net..you will get there quicker with certain activities obviously..
Agreed. I personally am okay with a 2GB limit with unlimited voice and text for $45/month. That, to me, is still a fantastic plan compared to the competition. My usage is pretty standard, email, web, directions, very few youtube videos. Plus I can easily make a habit of always being on wifi at home to be on the cautious side. On my prior 5GB plan on T-Mobile, I think I only ever ONCE went over 2GB (over like 3 years), and that was when my wifi was out at home and my roommate and I were both using my phone as a hotspot for our computers for like a week. On my last bill cycle with them, I checked and used ony about 550MB. So I'm cool with a 2GB cap.
Totally - they should just offer the plan as is, upfront: 2GB data plan. And as turmoil86 said, they should seriously just CUT OFF YOUR DATA, not deactivate your entire account, rendering your SIM useless and your # lost. That is a major flaw in their system. They can achieve the same result, without severely punishing the customer. You'd think it would be better for them in the long run too, because I can't imagine anyone who loses their service/# like that would come back or recommend ST to friends. That just plain sucks. I think the large majority of normal phone users would embrace a $45/month no-contract plan with a 2GB data plan, and they wouldn't have to worry about all this flap about the cap and plan cancellations.
You can be cut off with fewer than two gigabytes if they determine that you are violating the Terms and Conditions. Each of the carriers has that provision in its Terms and Conditions. Even Sprint will cut you off if you break the rules.

That is what cutting you off means. Your line is cancelled. In the case of Straight Talk, they do not have to give you any warning. The warning is a courtesy.
TERMINATION OF SERVICE: Either party may terminate this Agreement (which will terminate the provision of Straight Talk service) at any time. Any unused service at the time of termination will not be refunded. Straight Talk may terminate this Agreement at any time without notice if we cease to provide service in your area. We may interrupt or terminate your service without notice for any conduct that we believe violates this Agreement, if you behave in an abusive, derogatory or similarly unreasonable manner with any of our representatives, if we have reasonable cause to believe that you are using your Straight Talk phone and/or wireless service for an unlawful purpose or in a way that may adversely affect our service, if you engage in any deceptive or unfair conduct with respect to your Straight Talk phone and/or wireless service. Any provision of this Agreement which by its context is intended to apply after termination of the Agreement will survive termination, including, but not limited to, any restrictions on the use of Straight Talk phones.
Re: TOS.... Unlocked vs TMO and ATT phones.... Have a hunch they can better monitor the TMO/ATT phones types of usage better than an unlocked phone? So if they figure out that your usage type is in violation, they likely flag the account and monitor the actual aggregate usage more closely than other accounts? What do you guys think?
