Leafs ink Dion Phanuef and Phil Kessel to new 3 yr contracts

Toronto Maple Leafs will announce that they have inked team captain Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel to 3 yr contract extensions.

We don’t normally cover sports here but the Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel contracts have an interesting clause. Seems the Maple Leafs (who are owned by Rogers and Bell) will have to pay Dion and Phil an early cancellation fee if they cut them before their contracts are up.

Talk about turning the tables on Rogers/Bell

Kessel is a good signing. Dion? They did rate him as most overrated player in the NHL.

Hopefully the Leafs can finally get back into the playoffs next year.
This, coming from an American that is a die hard Blackhawks fan but also a traditionalist which believes the Original 6 should always be great.

Unfortunately these are the only 2 branded names that Leafs have rite now. They must really love them. Shows how much little depth we have. Another rebuilding period is on the way................

In other news, the Vancouver Canucks announced today that franchise goaltender Roberto Luongo has signed another 12-year contact extension keeping him with the Canucks until 2033-2034 season. In 2009, Luongo signed a controversial 12-year heavily front-loaded contract that would see him in a Canucks uniform until 2021. Many pundits were critical of the contract which was believed to be a circumvention of the NHL salary cap. Apparently, Canucks management sought to right this wrong by today offering Luongo another 12-year contract, but now a heavily back-loaded contract paying the goaltender $10 million in each of his last 3 years starting in 2030, when Luongo is 50 years-old.
