If I want to switch back to AT&T after doing this, what is involved? Can I just pop my AT&T sim back in the phone?

I would just restore from that backup copy you made, or remember your two edits and change them back when you're done.

OK, I changed the two edits in a copy of my iPhone back up. Can I now just replace my iPhone backup with this edited copy and then restore from iTunes or do I have to ibackupbot to do the restore?

Although I didn't have this issue, I didn't realize you could disable backup encryption and start digging around in the image. I generally take the direct approach on a jailbroken device and completely disregard backups. Useful information, thank you.

First time posting in forum. At & T locked iphone 4 running 5.1, no jailbreak. Data is working, no mms. Can you please repost the revised changes to the plist files? Thank you.

Ive found the location of the iPhone back in my MobileSync directory. There's two folders one for iPhone one for iPad. Should I just copy the entire folder to another location to keep a backup safe?
Keep trying At&t: try chat or by calling and being very polite..say you are going to be traveling out of US and really need the unlock. I got a very helpful rep who took care of me fast. Good luck and keep calling.

Any ideas how to change the PDP context 2 to active? I saw this in an apple iphone 4s forum. Thanks.

Are you sure you changed the "ip3" section to 'att.mvno' from the default 'wap.cingular' value? Do you have any other values for APN than att.mvno?

It is honestly easier to just do a tethered jailbreak using redsnow, get tetherme(free if you add the insanelyi repo to your cydia sources), and change your APN. After that if you want to remove the jailbreak you just need to backup the iPhone in iTunes and the restore the phone. It may tell you that the settings have changed and ask you if you want to keep them.....say yes. The ST APN will still be there be the phone will be back to stock. Confirmed to work on 5.1 and 5.1.1. I've done both. Much easier than typing lines of code.

I just did this fix on 5/26/2012. Iphone 4S. Using 5.1.1

MMS is working great. All is well. Took me about 30 mins total while carefully following the steps and downloading the little programs.

Thanks so much. iOS 5.1.1 on 4 (non "S").

Here's my successful short version for Windows without backup/restore process.
    Things needed:
    1. "DiskAid" (digidna.net) to browse, download, upload files from i-device.
    2. "plist Editor for Windows" to edit/save plist files.

I had applied APN setting via unlockit.co.nz weeks ago before this modification.

Extract (drag/drop) these two files and keep them in a folder for backup. Duplicate them to another folder for modification.

    var/preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mms_override.plist

preferences.plist > Upon opening the file I noticed a string of "att.mvno" existed above "IP3." And after changing "wap.cingular" to "att.mvno" (the string under "IP3") I would have two strings of "att.mvno" within the file. I'm assuming the first one was added due to custom APN installation.

Drag/drop the modified files to the respective folders and overwrite. Reboot and should be working.

You didn't mention anything about com.apple.mms_override.plist

I downloaded the trial version of Diskaid. When I connect my iPhone4 I do not see way to get to the root files. Doesn't the phone have to be jailbroken to see those files?
