Fiber backhaul for Verizon in Southern Illinois in 2013 - about time.
Well just got this message from an AT&T cell site tech for northern MI.
"Sorry I dont keep up with this much anymore. Wish I had better news for you but that area [northeast MI] has been on the list off the list etc. I dont know at the moment. Gaylord is for sure going [3G] but I don't know we're you got your times from."

Rejection is not failure.
You may be in the largest chunk of EDGE left in the entire AT&T system. Holy crap I didn't realize how much there was out there.
I'm guessing everyone in Rogers City has Verizon.
Just based on the geographical size of THAT, it's going to be really hard to get all that live by 12/31/2012.
Holy crap.
That's a big gap. Granted there's no LTE their either.
Trust me. I've been grilling any AT&T employee around here for answers. I've just about had it too. Every AT&T person tells me a different story. I'm getting completely fed up with it. Anyone know the email to the "executive" customer service people? When I was with VZ, I emailed their "executive" team and got a phone call about my coverage issues within 24 hours.
I'M SICK OF GETTING LEFT BEHIND.
Contact your local BBB.

I'd try your local state rep's office too.
Good plan, it took action by our State Representative and State Senator to get AT&T to upgrade 4 sites and provide the only 3G/HSPA+ available in the northwest quarter of Oklahoma, for a city of 15,000 people. AT&T is not going to upgrade anything on their own, you'll have to make them.
Attachment 81626
AT&T performed this upgrade 3 years ago, and have been saying ever since that they are going to upgrade the rest of that native area to 3G as well, but nothing has happened. Big surprise
Honestly I'm not convinced that in areas where Verizon is already dominant that AT&T launching LTE would make a bit of difference even if Verizon only had EV-DO there. I wish I could see what happens in this regard in the Rhode Island towns with AT&T LTE and Verizon EV-DO 3G. I'm pretty sure Rhode Island is VZW country as they were the ILEC there stretching back to the Bell Atlantic/New England Telephone days.
Well I'll spoil the ending. I doubt that hardly any people in those areas switch to AT&T from VZW. If the smaller towns in this track of AT&T LTE - which is the exception to the rule - have large numbers of defections I'd be shocked.
I have to think One AT&T Tower is doing this as an experiment post T-Mobile fail.
Now in the inverse, VZW could come to an AT&T dominant place around me like Perryville, MO, and kill HSPA+ with LTE. Almost no one would switch to LTE. I think it's a sheep mentality with mobile in the smaller towns, motivated by M2M. Across the river here, if AT&T had got Alltel here and built a kickarse HSPA+ network I doubt most people in my region change over from Verizon.
Honestly I doubt they switch in TWX's area if it's a place where AT&T has EDGE and VZ has LTE. I wish I thought that was true. I just am not sure consumers are that smart anymore. My faith is shaken.
Baaahhh.

Well, just finished talking to customer care which was very depressing. All the sites that were scheduled in my area to get 3G by this summer have now been pushed back to mid to late 2013. That means I'll be stuck on this garbage EDGE network for another 1.5 years!!! I'm so disappointed with AT&T. This is really unacceptable. Verizon will have my area covered with LTE in less time than that. There is NO excuse for this. AT&T is choosing to leave customers on their slow EDGE network. If I could get out of 4 ETF's, I would be switching to VZ by the end of this year when the new iPhone comes out.
Someone from the Office of the President is supposed to be calling me tomorrow and I better get a ridiculously good explanation of why they aren't upgrading my are to at least 3G.
Let's put odds on this.
What are the chances someone says "we'd have LTE everywhere by the end of 2013 if the government voted yes on the T-Mobile deal"?
I still don't buy it as AT&T stands to lose rural customers if this plays out like I think it does. It would be one thing if they had HSPA+ to compete with LTE. EDGE?
I am seriously beginning to question the business sense of this.
I hope VZW's corporate office reads this. I believe they have a better chance of fixing their coverage holes there than AT&T upgrading their networks there.
Ironically the FCC used AT&T's "history of network-wide deployment of new technologies" as a reason to turn down the T-Mobile buyout. Oops.

Is G1 worth getting if I only have EDGE?
