I am considering prepaid options and it seems the best prepaid carriers are VM and Boost.
I like that Boost has the shrinkage plan that you can get down to $40 a month. (Of course that is dependent on you liking their service.)
I noticed that VM has the $35 a month plan w/ 300 minutes. That might be fine for me since I don't do that much talking. I would really just like my phone to be able to do occasional web surfing and use it to check email.
I have a friend though that always seems to be using up his minutes on VM. Does VM allow you to add minutes onto your phone if you need to? I have read mix things about VM service on here. Seems like Boost generally has better phone service.
I should add that I have a VZW dumbphone and the contract doesn't expire until May, 2013.
I am thinking of just keeping the phone because until then because the ETF is $120. So I would want to try to find the best option for having a second phone that is a smartphone.
VM is ok if you don't stream videos on their data network. For phone calls, occasional web surfing or using apps that doesn't require too much data is a good value.
I would probably want to stream Youtube videos sometimes.
Have you looked at straight talk 45$ unlimited everything, and there's also t-mobile prepaid 4g. You have a lot of options, plus Straight Talk runs on sprints towers with it's android models. So it all comes down to which covers you better. Straight Talk doesn't have as many models as Virgin and is supposed to have pretty bad customer service. So as people have told me it would be a good idea to get a cheap Virgin phone, and not activate it and test signal strength. Then if it doesn't work for you can return it, to most stores.

Since you use VZW, you should look into pageplus, in addition to the other prepaid options in your area.

Operating without a contract makes you far more valuable.
With any luck, all this competition may get 2GB out if them down the road.

Yeah, I would say a 1GB hard cap is a bad thing when people can go through 5GB on Virgin post-throttling. But maybe I'm just one of them data hogs so you know.
I'd imagine a nay on StraightTalk just because a 2GB cap-ish thing isn't very nice either. Wal-Mart is also probably a bad place to trust your phone's service through.*
A person from Radioshack recently claimed you get shut off Boost if you dare use too much data and skip your monthly charge for as little as a day. (Same person didn't seem remarkably reliable though.) But seriously, Boost looks like a legitimate option if you want a higher data cap... I'm theorizing 5GB before throttling (if any) kicks in.* All I know is VM has officially throttled (twice) and Boost never has. Whether twice the price (for data) is really twice as nice, is up for debate.
VM is still a value leader for a small/moderate number of minutes and unlimited data.* Provided T-Mobile coverage is bad enough.
*These are educated opinions by an uneducated person.

People over on the Boost forum say they don't get throttled at all.
Maybe they have not gone past 2.5Gb yet.
How much data do you want/need? What are you needing your data for?
Boost mobile is just like VM, both are Sprint 3G.
If your data needs require faster speeds, then T-Mobile has a nifty $30 service option that should not be overlooked. Boost is your best choice if you can deal with Sprint 3G speeds and need Unlimited Talk on a monthly basis. If you do not need Unlimited Talk then VM delivers flexible service options that include Unlimited Messaging and Data.

TMO is the best option for data speeds if you rarely use minutes and live in one of the big cities where TMO tends to concentrate its cell towers. At $35/month, VM really isn't the best deal for most, especially with their limited device setup and snail-slow data speeds.
$5 more with BM gets you more smartphone options and much faster data speeds. The $5 savings are worth it if you live in a town where Sprint towers exist but Sprint customers are nearly nonexistent. It's under these conditions VM customers tend to get a good deal.
