We became AT&T free about a year ago when a local ISP began offering a bundle of DSL and unlimited landline service. Well they still use AT&T's copper, but they have all their own network equipment and phone switches. Strange that AT&T decided to allow this. The ISP is now stringing their own fiber to the home, but it'll be a long time before they complete that system.

Ouch, $33 for 100MB of data! On PP you get 100MB of data, 1200 minutes, and 3000 texts for $29.95 (less with discounts). Of course you need a Verizon handset to use PP.

I have never used more than 10mb data in any given month and make about an hour worth of calls per month. Why would i pay $30 for $10 worth of usage per month?

Why are you talking Verizon in a gophone thread? Apples and oranges, can't use sims in Verizon phones.

Some can, but I expect that you really meant that you can't use GSM phones with SIM cards on Verizon, which is true. The cost of the handset is a one time expense so if the monthly savings are sufficient it can be well worth switching. I'd like an unlocked global phone that worked on both Verizon and GSM carriers, like the Incredible 2 or one of the Motorola Droid global phones (or the Verizon iPhone 4s). In the western U.S., GSM coverage is poor, but CDMA coverage is very good, but still need a GSM phone for most travel.

I'm very confused WRT porting to Airvoice. It appears that to do the porting on-line, it has to be a new account with an un-used SIM and you must have a pre-purchased airtime card. How do you port after you have tried the service? A new SIM? Or just call in?

That's anywhere between $5-$15 monthly. Now I have to pay $25 plus $5-$15 but most likely $5 just to keep data, smh. Now what if for next month I decide to renew my data using my acct. balance and not renew the rate plan. My acct bal. exp date is 6/19/2012 while rate plan expires 5/17/2012.
I'm pretty sure you must rollover your data on a separate transaction monthly to keep your balance, and you must let AT&T take your monthly service fee of $30. If either runs out, you lose your data. But, like I say, I'm pretty sure it works that way. Maybe it is in their TOS somewhere.

As far as your "acct balance" expiring 6/19/12, I'm not sure what that is. It can't be the data expiration. I'm thinking it means that if your available balance = "0", you will lose your account on 6/19/12 and lose your number. I know with PAYG, if my funds are good until 4/19/12, my account will be terminated as of 6/19/12 if I do not replenish it. So, that's my thinking here. (60 days)

Porting to an AT&T MVNO or between AT&T and its MVNO's has to be done on a blank SIM. If you activate Airvoice service with a number assigned by them and you want to port a number of yours at a later date, you will have to get a new Airvoice SIM. You'll probably need to contact Airvoice's CS to ensure your existing prepaid airtime and service expiration with them get transfered to your newly-ported number.

Ok, Thanks, I did buy 2 on ebay for $1.45 ea. in case, so I'm glad I did.

I "WAS" thinking of going strictly PAYG, until I read the fine print "So, using one full MB of data will result in a $2.00 data charge". Ah, not likely! 10MB = $20, don't think so!

So, I guess the $10/mo plan with "33 cents per MB" data may work.

Not sure about how they claim "No Daily Fees, No Monthly Fees, No Hidden Fees" when the plan is $10.00 monthly. Am I missing something? Is that not monthly? Or do the charges come out of the $10.00?

You didn't have to "upgrade" now. You could have waited until your data package was about to expire. Or could have added just a $5/10MB on the 17th to extend the data expiration to the max without going monthly. But anyway, you already did.

Will old unactivated Cingular or AT&T SIMs work if they're cut down to MicroSIM size and activated on one of these $25 or $25 paygo monthly plans?

Does anyone know: Now that GoPhone is roamable in Canada, can a SIM be activated on the web while the SIM and phone are in Canada, and then activate one of these new plans over the AT&T website with your credit card? Or does the SIM have to be present on the AT&T network when registering for the first time.

    Thx.

There is always a catch. Look at this excerpt from the Terms and Conditions:

    Suspending Service:
Airvoice will not suspend service if your phone was lost, stolen, misplaced, or broken. It is your responsibility to purchase a new Non-Active Airvoice SIM card and compatible phone immediately or you will lose your remaining airtime days. The expiration date on your account cannot be changed or extended for any reason.
So you need to get a replacement SIM card immediately to avoid someone else using up your balance and to allow the transfer to your new account.

Good to know the data works....

Things that bother me about them is their PAYG charges a $1 monthly maintenance fee (a "hidden" fee, as they derisively refer to them, in their $10 plan description).

But more bothersome is that the terms of service for their PAYG says data costs $2 per MB (!) when the same very same webpage claims $0.33 per MB just above.

Such a lack of attention to details and double-talk is worrisome, and I guess that partly explains why they're an AT&T MVNO.

I'm slightly leaning to T-Mo PAYG: as stated, 2G is better than 0G, and data on my phone represents a back-up for when Sprint is poor/unavailable, or just out of convenience (eg when I don't feel like carrying my Cradlepoint 4G mobile router).

Such laziness justifies spending as much as I did on the old AT&T PAYG as a disposable luxury purchase, but for $25 more a month to buy what I really don't need (voice airtime) and won't use? Thanks, AT&T, for fixing my laziness and sloth.....

Just like the PAYG, their $10 monthly plan also states $0.33 per MB at the top, but discloses $2 per MB in the terms and conditions. Apparently their lawyers never vetted the website, or they never took contract law....
