What is probably not legal here is that they are not allowing existing users to at least continue to use the existing funds in their account to purchase data under the old terms until the funds in the account on April 17th are exhausted, at which time the customer could leave. If anyone wanted to take the trouble to do so, what they could do is to file a case in small claims court. This is what people did when AT&T began throttling unlimited data customers, and AT&T lost in court, and then at least increased the unlimited 3G limit to 3GB from 2GB. Win or lose, it's a huge hassle for AT&T to defend multiple cases in small claims court, and win or lose, there is tremendous negative publicity.
The other thing here is that they continued to sell new GoPhone handsets up until April 17th, without disclosing that they were worsening the GoPhone program on April 18th. If you look at GoPhone's for sale on Amazon, you'll see that the wrong information is still there, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005V50FZY.
So here's my question, I seem to be on the "Smartphone 10c/min rate" that AT&T had for a while and it seems like I can add the new data options no problem so far can anyone else confirm/deny this? not sure about any Grandfathering etc but I haven't received any SMS messages or the like from AT&T this month beyond my usual renew reminders.
yep went through, And I switched back to the Smartphone 10c/min way back when it first came out from the standard 10c/min plan months, maybe a year ago so I'm a bit baffled myself.
When I try to add some data, from my balance, I get this:
Alert
To complete this transaction and add Data 50MB Feature Package to your account you must change your current rate plan. Any services included in your existing rate plan will be lost.
Please select a Rate plan from the list below.
$25 Monthly Plan
$50 Monthly Unlimited Plan
And when I try to add a feature package, I get this:
We seem to be experiencing system issues, please call 611 from your prepaid phone for further assistance.
I'm on the 10c/min plan also...but I can't buy data anymore. I never got a text message warning me about this change.
So i was pretty pissed yesterday when I found out my 500mb was going to expire by next week
What bugs me the most is that almost NO news site is telling the full truth. They keep saying it is good news that everyone is getting double the data for the same price.
I should just triple clarify for everyone that I'm on the "Smartphone 10c/min" plan opposed to the usual dumb-phone "10c/min" But yeah I agree the absurdity of this all is amazing, fuzzy news everywhere, I didn't even know about this untill juzst this morning when a friend messaged me out of the blue on gTalk.
I suspect no one really knows about this yet - I know I only read about it on this and another forum, and never got a text from AT&T warning me. Most people will only find out when they go to renew their data package.
I think the only difference is data wise? It was 10c/min and pay per use data for dumphones. Smartphone 10c/min was forcing us to buy data packages that expired every 30 days. And I doubt you can switch. Unless you can spoof your smartphone to look like a dumbphone. I could be wrong though.
And my outrage will involve figuring out how to unlock my GSII and switching to tmobile and going without data
Unless of course ATT feels like being nice and letting people get grandfathered in with their old prices.... (one can dream)
Here's a snapshot of my account screen sans any Personal info, from what I remember the smartphone 10c a min rate was made last year or so same as the usual 10c plan except there was no data without packages i.e no by the kb, it was supposed to "save people from hefty overage charges" or something like that. I'd assume they long since discontinued that plan maybe even before these other ones.![]()
