Yeah, it seems to deduct the 100KB minimum every time there's a network connection.

I'm trying h20 now to see if it's any better. I can't even view my balance anymore for some reason on the h20 site. It worked before but now it says "Your Phone number seems not to be ours." Sigh. I really wish ATT hadn't changed their policy.

Yeah, it sucks, since everything worked pretty well. I'd put in $100, buy $25 of data occassionally, and $5/mo rollover. I thought it was a good deal for both sides. Plus I was way overpaying for text messages. Now, I'm shelling out more money and changing things around. Oh well.

Maybe there's a cydia app/mod that prevents cellular usage when the phone isn't in use?
    SBSettings has a toggle...

TRU has always done the rounding to 100kB increments AFAIK at least it has for the 2 years or better I have used them. Not a big deal for me as cellular data would always be off by default and only turned on when I really needed to use it, then off again. Kind of a pain I can understand but overall I still think TRU is the best deal going for a [very] light user right now without monthly fees.

    H20...good luck with that.

Thanks. As soon as there's an untethered 5.1 jailbreak I'll check it out.

So far H2o has been good. Setup was quick and easy, but more importantly by balance hasn't decreased at all due to a few KB of data usage

I wanted to go with Airvoice but honestly their site doesn't inspire much confidence. And there doesn't appear to be a way to do auto refill. I hear H2o support is bad, but I don't anticipate needing much support. I never used ATT's support for anything.

But H2o and Airvoice force you to refill at least $10 every xx days right? It seems like Tru has no refill every xx days requirement. So you can use your airtime as long as you want

Yes, that's a big advantage for Tru. But I use about $10 worth of calls/data per month, so it's not an issue for me. I use small amounts of data quite regularly, so Tru's requirement that I enable/disable data every usage to avoid the 50 cents per day data drain is not acceptable to me.

TRU is not for every one no doubt about it. The great thing about prepaid is you can quit yesterday and move to a new provider.

I have plenty of lines for voice and text, so I use little (read: almost none) voice/text any way. Just the occasional data session and for me TRU has 2 advantages here(in my case): long expiry (90 days, little cost to keep active); coverage (T-Mo + AT&T).

I have used H20 in the past. In fact I remember using it in the days of iPhone 3G(S?) when the "Genius" was shocked to see any thing other than AT&T display on the screen and told me I was a jailbreaker etc LOL I don't have anything terribly negative to say about them - customer service sucked even back then. They did speak english but took forever and also I recall them double dipping on a credit card at least once which I had to follow up to rectify. Every thing I have read and heard about them since has been rather negative.

I'm considering switching to Tru, and I was wondering if anyone had any new experiences to share. I also have two questions that I hope current Tru users could answer.

First, how does switching between the T-Mobile and AT&T networks work? Can you choose which network to use or does it only use AT&T when T-Mobile is unavailable? I ask because I have pretty weak T-Mobile reception but really good AT&T signal at my office, so I'd like to use AT&T there.

Second, has anyone beside dmarkson been able to connect to the T-Mobile network on HSDPA, or is everyone stuck on EDGE? Has anyone been able to get 3G data speeds?

I have a Tru SIM. I have experimented with it in several unlocked phones. They include a ZTE F160, a Pantech Link, a Nokia 6555 and some other Nokia phones. I can manually select the AT&T or T-Mobile network in all of the phones, except the F160, which allows me to use T-Mobile only. It will probably switch to AT&T, if I travel outside T-Mobile coverage, but I haven't tried that yet. (I have to travel quite far to get out of T-Mobile coverage).

My display tells me that I have access to EDGE, but I have not yet been successful in accessing data with the Tru SIM. It is probably just a matter of having the correct settings on the phone. Tru customer service told me that when I put the SIM in the phone, it would probably configure the settings on the phone, but that did not happen. I intend to call their customer service and try to get the correct settings for the Pantech Link, but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet.

I used mine on an old Nokia 6086 flip phone (no 3G capability) for voice and text only. My phone will connect to AT&T or T-Mobile, depending on which has the better signal. I've not yet investigated the network select function on the phone.
    Now Tracfone free!

TRU prefers T-Mobile but will go to AT&T; You can manually switch to AT&T but the phone will return back to T-Mobile after some time (assuming signal). As for data, sorry, EDGE only. No 3G. There have been sporadic reports of people getting 3G but I've never once been able to register on anything but EDGE and that seems to be the consensus of the few TRU users that have posted here as well.

I do not use data=no comment on that.
If you phone allows manual network selection, it will show you which networks are available and then allow you to select the one you want. Different phones/people have different results. One person in his experience uses the word 'prefer' to describe which network has precidence. I am in southern California and both networks are superfine. One recent phone does not allow manual switching. Others allow and stay on the network I choose. One would not let me use one of the networks until I took it out of the phone and set it to the other network on a different phone and now it is on the other network on the other phone. Whether you choose or not it will be on a network that will work.

I received my sim and ported my number to it, but I'm having trouble with texts. Do you have to prepend the +1 country code to send and receive texts?

Not sure if you need to prepend with +1. Nothing wrong with trying it that way. If that does not work, call their customer service. Is it just outgoing txt, or both in and outgoing?
