Also for what its worth according to a tech I spoke with a few weeks ago USCCs primary 3G roaming partner is now Sprint. That suposidly changed some time in 2011. He made it sound like there was a falling out with VZ over something, what I do not know.

Though, a few things have changed since then:

--Verizon & AT&T have improved their coverage to (often) match USCC
--USCC is no longer much cheaper than the big two
    --Data became far more important
--Popular hardware became much more in demand, even excluding the iPhone
This is true but what you also need to consider is a lot of marketing polls say most consumers don't really understand 4G and don't value it as much as carriers would like. I'm sure that will change with time but I personally know many people on the 3G is fast enough for what I use my phone bandwagon and 4G just uses up data faster.

That's valid, but I think it will be much sooner than most realize.

One of my houses is in Missouri, and I frequently visit mid-Missouri, where AT&T and US Cellular have the cellular licenses. As a result, my Verizon service (on PCS) often switches to "Extended" (USCC roaming) whenever I get too far in the middle of nowhere or go too deep inside old buildings. I probably use more minutes roaming on USCC than many USCC customers use in a month--which has got to be great news for USCC as they collect those per minute fees!

However, Verizon is supposed to have LTE covering everywhere I go by the time the first VoLTE devices are launched this year. As I intend to try out VoLTE as soon as I can, I'll be getting one of those--which means that I'll no longer be roaming on USCC by the end of this year.

That's a pretty quick turnaround. Even if they don't push the devices until a year from now, that's still less than 2 years before a substantial portion of their customer base is on VoLTE.

    Verizon's 3G network. ............................................ AT&T's 3G network.

    Verizon's 4G network.

I wonder if VoLTE will encourage USCC to develop their network in areas they have licenses and spectrum for Voice or Data but not enough spectrum for both voice and data. They own 10mhz in the entire Mississippi Valley (all of tenn, Arkansas, Alabama, Missouri,Mississippi, and most of Louisiana) they also have unused licenses in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Topeka and Kansas city. All of those areas they have as much spectrum as their using for LTE but not enough to couple it with voice.

I also think USCC will be bought or buy other carriers but I think ATT and Verizon will stay away for awhile still. I think IR more likely smaller providers would be more interested. Sprint, Metro PCS, C-Spire, Ntelos are all candidates to purchase or be purchased. The mid tier providers are all likely to big for their own good because they wont benifit like the very small providers with dual coverage and ways around exclusive contracts but to small for their own big deals. The super regional market will consolidate but unless Sprint or Metro are the buyers I think mergers are more likely. Not metro could also be bought. Verizon or ATT won't pay a premium for USCC and the Carolsons wont sell until they have to because they'll want a premium. The Carlson family tends to be conservative and not sell early or even until it's to late.

It makes sense for Verizon to purchase USCC. My God I hope Sprint doesn't...

The largest wireless carrier in the nation buying any other mobile carrier would surely be nearing an anti-trust violation.

Sprint would be a much better choice, with their NV rollout.

Sprints network vision is a sinking ship. NV is not on schedule.. Hopefully soon, very soon we will see Sprint's demise!

Less competition in the market is no good for anyone. Why would you hope for one more company to fail?

While I don't share your hopes your probably right that's the only way we see uscc purchase parts of sprint. They wouldn't get the whole thing but it would make sense to buy Kansas city, Topeka, all of NC to fill in the gaps, Missouri, Virginia and West Virginia, Minnesota, and Indiana... not that that's going to happen.

I agree that Sprints network is in bad shape, and they probably waited far too long to get to work on improving it, but in areas where NV is complete the network is far better.

USCC's network is getting pretty bad too. My 3g speeds hover between 400-600kbps. At least Sprint is bringing LTE to Chicago - which is more than USCC can say (and this is their home market).

True but USCC's biggest customer base isn't Chicago, its actually got far more customers in Iowa and SE Wisconsin (Milwaukee area) and Madison (TDS USCC's parent is HQ'd there)

I should probably correct my earlier statement

That's my own perception... I can't back that up with sources.
