Hi Wireless Junkie. Do you recall what you did to force the Duramax to 1x? I've done it on my Admiral, but I am trying to try 1x to 1x with someone who has a Duramax.
Thanks.

Well after a good many long years of iDEN, its time for me to move on.. iDEN has been a good friend and offered fantastic call quality and the best Direct Connect PTT service vs. any other platform.
But lately Sprint seems to not be keeping up maintenance on the iDEN network, we have a few sites that have been completely down for the last few weeks after some tornado's and they are loner sites and not part of NV so iDEN units are completely dead.. Though they have been offering free Admirals to people free to keep direct connect.
I originally tried the Kyocera Duramax and was able to force PTT over 1X and roaming, but the quality of the handsets are not nearly as good as the i686's I came from.
So I moved on from the Duramax to Motorola Admiral's, these handsets are much more stable and the speaker clarity is just like iDEN.
For the most part SDC to SDC is flawless, almost if not as quick as iDEN, and very very clear.
SDC to NDC or vice versa sounds pretty bad a lot of the time in my experience, extremely muffled in a lot of cases.
Pro's of SDC
- Much better coverage when roaming is factored in
- Much newer, and more capable smartphone than on iDEN
- Very clear and works well in areas even with poor Sprint EVDO speeds
Negative's about SDC
- Still only works on native Sprint EVDO. PTT over 1X and Roaming coming when????
- Direct Connect to an iDEN unit can be distorted and muffled
- In low signal area's SDC can cut out more often than iDEN did in low signal conditions, but not too significant
- Direct Connect is not as integrated as the iDEN units were, but still a very good implementation..
iDEN has served its purpose very well, but with SDC performance as good as it is then its time to phase out iDEN and replace it with better PTT services.
As far as the Sprint PCS voice and data service networks go, while it is not perfect or the best in every area, over the last 6-12 months they have been making dramatic improvements and bringing the network up to acceptable and great conditions across the country.
These pics I took in New Braunfels, TX outside San Antonio where the guys were busy at work upgrading cell sites as part of the network vision plan including adding SDR and remote radio head antenna's including LTE 1900mhz and SMR 1X
The reason equipment is above ground is because it floods very bad in this area.
This is the panel equipment, you can see the new remote radio head technology!
Working on the Base station equipment
Here is the highest speed I have hit yet with my iPhone
Typical speed - Notice the very low ping
Overall in the last few months Sprint has made dramatic and much needed changes and hopefully they will continue to pour in like they have been.

"Give me dBm, or give me death!"
Rich,
After the latest update, my Duramax connects right to 1X no problem. Has he installed the latest OTA update?

We're actually in an EVDO area, but trying to force the phone onto Sprint 1x for testing purposes. It may very well work on 1x but there is nowhere to escape EVDO.
Ah I got it.
On the Admiral, just enter
*#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone information and in the drop down that says "CDMA auto (PRL)" and select "CDMA only"
This will force 1x (or some of the other modes listed).
That is how we tested 1x PTT while in an EVDO area.
I'm trying to figure out what the small panel is on the very left in the top picture--is that a new NV panel for 1900, or are they still putting in gear for Lightsquare or Clear in some places? I know the larger ones with the RRH's are for 800 and the medium sized ones look like legacy 1900.
From what I remember, each NV site was supposed to have one large panel for 800/1900 and a smaller panel for Lightsquared/Clear on each sector (while keeping the legacy ones in place--they are going on a spree to remove the legacy ones once NV is completely up)-- but then after the whole Lightsquared thing got tangled up, I thought they dropped the second panel, and decided not to co-locate with Clear. It's hard to see the other side, but it looks like this site is still under construction, and I don't see another matching small panel on the other side so I'm not sure if it's legacy or not.
I doubt it's Lightsquared (unless they are still hoping for a launch or this was planned/ordered before the LS stuff happened--I just noticed the April post date) -- did they decide to work with Clear again after they renewed their agreement for TD-LTE?

The little tiny panel was a WiMax panel, which they were in the process of decommissioning for whatever reason along with iDEN on that site. Was for sure not Lightsquared and haven't seen any of those around TX for that matter.
The new RRH beamforming MIMO antenna's were of course for 800/1900mhz LTE and CDMA and the legacy cylindrical antenna's for 1900mhz are now officially gone!! I am going to grab a picture of it here soon.
