I wanted something small & quiet, so I went to a 2010 Mac Mini. I'd expected to dual boot XP originally, but it's turned out to be months between Windows loads. Only cost me $30 to maxed out the RAM a few months ago, and it does for what I need these days.

My previous desktop and laptop were both about 4 years old. I just upgraded to a custom built desktop a few months ago. It's got an i7 quad core with htt. 16GB of ram. 180GB solid state drive for the OS, and 2TB drive for media. HDMI out video card. I'm also running it with dual monitors (21.6" and 23"). I love this machine...so fast! I don't see myself needing to upgrade for a long time.

The laptop I went with this time was the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook. "Netbook on steroids"!! Ha! Well it does everything I need it to. The only thing missing is a disk drive. And I'd prefer more than 2 USB ports, but I can live with that. Other than that it's a great little machine for my needs. 100x better than a net book.

Ditto. 2.53GHz Core2Duo with 8GB RAM, 500GB HD, and integrated graphics. It still runs pretty well, but eventually I'll get an SSD. I expect it to last me at least two more years, especially since I can always switch it to Linux or Windows.

My desktop is almost 5 years old now and still runs like a champ. e8400 Core 2 Duo! I've had an SSD for the last 2 years. I'm planning to upgrade everything next year, but only because I want to get back into gaming. This setup still sucks for gaming.

My desktop is a 7 year old emachines with a 2.93ghz Celeron D processor that runs well I've tried to maintain it and it still functions good for light stuff. Ram isn't easy to find for it because it doesn't support dual sided x 16 organization which is all I can find. My laptop is a couple months old it's a Dell Intel core i7 with turbo boost 8gb of ram and a 750gb hard drive it has everything built in except a blu ray player. I got one heck of a deal on it.

If you've only been looking in brick and mortar stores, try a site like Crucial (there are other companies too). They let you put in your machines make and model to get a listing of compatible memory.

I'm not affiliated with Crucial. They're just what comes to mind. You could also try Googling your computer's make and model with the word RAM or memory.

I just replaced my two year old dell with a 2011 refurbed MacBook pro. The dell performed great in everything but encoding. I encode a lot of video for my iPad so I need some quad power, plus I just wanted a MacBook. I stuck an SSD in it and I don't see replacing for at least three years.
