Does he pay he pay his bills on time? My guess is he's late paying and Verizon doesn't trust him to give him an upgrade at the normal 20 month mark.

Okay so I have a friend who got a phone for X-mas of 2009 so 12/09, and he is telling me verizon won't let him upgrade until may 26th of this year, meaning 2.5 yrs or 30 months after his contract started. Has anyone heard of this or is there any way this is even possible? I've never heard of verizon doing a contract for more than 24 months or denying upgrades until 6 months after the contract ends.
Either way he has emails saying that is his upgrade date is set for 30 months after he got the phone and that just seems seriously wrong to me.
Okay I just got my friend to do #874 and here is what his text message said
Upgrade Available on 08/01/13
Upgrade at Full PriceTransfer Upgrade
So now he is moved back another 15 months. I assume this warrants calling verizon and throwing a major fit?

That doesn't sound right. I mean is he still on contract? They must have really screwed his account.

He's on a family plan and pays his dad his share each month. I don't think his dad pays late, but even if he did that's no excuse for pushing his upgrade date to 3 years 8 months after he got his phone.
Just must be a mistake. Upgrades are every 20 months. I'd say something weird happened. They should be able to research it and get it corrected. Are they absolutely sure they haven't upgraded or done an alternate upgrade or something. You don't know how often someone forgets they have their upgrade to another line just because they still have their old phone.
That makes no sense. I am not aware of paying late would push back your eligibility date or push back your upgrade date. Suspending your line, however, does push both those dates back. If the text message says that he is eligible for an upgrade on 8/1/13, that means his contract was renewed on 12/1/11 and it expires on 12/1/13. It's impossible for it being so screwed up where they pushed back his upgrade eligibility date 2 years. You said he is on a family plan. Are you sure that someone from his family plan didn't use his upgrade this past December?
You also said he got the iPhone for XMas 2009. That would be impossible on Verizon since Apple didn't release a CDMA iPhone until the iPhone 4 was available beginning February 2011. Your friend must be confused on when he got the iPhone. If he got the iPhone for XMas, it has to be this PAST XMas (2011) since a CDMA iPhone didn't exist during XMas 2010, which would jive with his current upgrade eligibility date.
Im willing to bet your friend is on a family share and did an alternate upgrade. Or, he had problems with his phone and was able to do a multi-phone replacement (rare today--dont try it kids) and that pushed his date back further. Or perhaps he did an annual upgrade.
There is clearly a dearth of good info to work with here. Pick one of those scenarios I outlined. The upgrades are every 20 months. So, there is more info needed.
No longer a VZW employee, but still a good information source.

With all that money you save monthly with your Sprint plan, you should be able to order Hooked On Phonics - remember, the phone number to order this is 1-800-ABCDEFG.

He tried online chat which said it was odd and told him to call customer service. I'm not sure if he'll even bother, but I just wanted to make sure it was a mistake and not likely some weird rule I didn't know about.
Also he said he was sure no one on his family plan had used his upgrade or anything.
I'm not sure if he suspended his line at all for any time but I don't think he would have.
It's possible one of his other family members used his upgrade for one of their phones. If that is the case he may now be able to use that person's upgrade on his line.
I'd say that's the case, but I find it highly unlikely since it is just his dad and him on the plan and I get the feeling his dad doesn't have a dumb phone, plus nothing explains why verizon told him his upgrade was in may 2012 in the first place if he go the phone jan 8th 2010. Even if he had a 1 yr contract and his dad stole his upgrade he would have been able to upgrade july 2012 not may. Oh well I'll just chalk it up to verizon royally screwing up.
Someone needs to call customer service to verify the upgrade dates. There would be some notation on the account that would explain the odd upgrade eligibility date. We can all speculate till we are blue in the face but only customer service can explain the real reason. It should be interesting. OP, please update your post when you know more.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

If I do manage to get him to call I'll let you guys know, I am kind of curious what happened, but given how some prepaid carriers have issues, it wouldn't surprise me if it really was just a glitch.
Did he perform any kind of assumption of liability? That can mess with an upgrade date (making it +20 months).
