    Optimus V

If this isn't the forum to ask these questions, I apologize. Please move it the appropriate forum.

I am considering buying a LG Optimus V. I went to a few retailers to ask a few questions and they shrugged their shoulders with a "I dunno."

I asked what version of Android came with the phone. They said it was either 2.1 or 2.2. I asked if version 2.1 could be upgraded to 2.2. They didn't know. Does anyone know if it can be upgraded?

I also asked if I can use the phone without buying a service plan. I was just going to use it with the wifi in my house. They didn't know. Does anyone know if I can use wifi and not pay for service?

    Thanks.

Newer ones ship with version 2.2.2, the older ones shipped with 2.2.1. They can be used as a wifi only device also, all Androids can if I'm not mistaken.

Yes. I bought one of those for my niece at college. It came with 2.2.2 and I had it working on my wi-fi before I activated it.

Great. This will be my very first smart phone.

I have read that it is NOT capable of flash video. Has anyone noticed that to be an issue?

You're correct in that it is NOT capable of flash video. It's not necessarily the version of Android that restricts Flash usage, but rather, it's the CPU inside the Optimus V that's too slow to handle Flash. If it makes you feel any better, I own both the Optimus V and HTC Thunderbolt, and Flash is super slow on my (much stronger) HTC Thunderbolt.

There are ways to get Flash working on the Optimus V, but the experience isn't perfect. You might need to be rooted too... the instructions I've read on it are so varied it's difficult even to say how to install it.

What types of site or apps will I wish I had Flash video capability? Does not having Flash video limit the use of the smart phone?

Please understand that I am a newbie.

Can I install more than one browser on my Optimus V? Is the best way to look at a smart phone as if it is just a small PC?

Can you have more than one OS on the Optimus V?

Yes. Although understand that most browsers are just a different overlay for the same browser that comes with Android. Dolphin HD, for example, has some extra fancy buttons, and tracks your usage, and reports it, but the core of it behaves exactly like the stock browser on your phone.

The only exceptions are Opera (Mini/Mobile) and Firefox (not available on your phone): They are generally larger because they use different engines than what is include din your phone.

    I do. It's a Linux box, really.

It is possible, but nobody has ported over another OS yet. Android is so cool, nobody wants to

I ran Windows 3.1 just for giggles one day. That's not really a separate OS, but one emulated/"on top of" the current one.

Past the 2.5Gb Data Speed Limit, Opera Mini becomes the better browser option. Sometimes even before, depending on location and signal reception.

I'd only disagree on grounds of it being bad with most Javascript-based websites. Otherwise I'd use it exclusively. As an added blessing, Opera Mobile offers image compression just like Opera Mini, which cuts down on data usage.
