You still have to search the cells and pat down the prisoners for contraband, unless a robot can do the same job the human can.
Probably more useful for supermax type prison facilities where inmates spend 23 hrs in their cell where a robot can constantly monitor them and provide meals as needed.
I'm a correctional officer in a medium security level prison. As someone else mentioned, these may be good for supermax, but not for a prison such as the type that I'm in where people can move freely within their given area.
Do these robots have the permission to shoot also? Just curious..
An autonomous robot seems like an expensive solution. An observation system (cameras, microphones, etc), perhaps riding on an overhead rail, connected to a central computer would seem more cost-effective. Of course, you're going to have to design it to be "messed with" by the inmates.
