    Data plan for 2g only?

    Hello,

I live in SW AZ, Yuma specifically. Basically, Tmo only has 2g, EDGE and GPRS I think, data out there. There is no 3g, 4g, etc. I currently have a phone that doesn't do data but I want to get a smart phone. I was wondering if there is a specific plan so that I am not paying for access to 4g and 3g when it is not even available. It also appears that on my phone when I download a picture message it uses EDGE. Is that part of my texting plan? Is there a way I could use that on a smartphone in order to surf the web/email via EDGE without incurring fees?

    Thanks,
    Jason

You're right, there's no 3g coverage for at least 40 miles in either direction of your location. The short end answer is - there is no 2g only plan. When you pay for data access, you pay for access to the entire network, not, just 3g or 2g.
When you download a picture message, it does use the data network, but your not charged for access. You are just charged for receiving a text message. There is no way to use data access for free. If you do not have a data plan, you can browse the web while on wifi, but not on t-mobile's data network.

You would still have to sign up with a data plan regardless, since ur going to be on edge I would just get either a 200mb plan that has overages if u know your not going to use a lot. Or the 2Gig plan if you use more then that.

I wouldn't even invest in a smartphone if i was only going to be on 2G the entire time. I would think about switching carriers, looks like other carriers have 3G/4G in your area.

A blackberry might be sufficient depending on what the OP was trying to do, you'd be surprised how well my 8900 worked on EDGE only with a 200mb plan. it did everything i wanted and i was able to easily stay under 200mb thanks to blackberry's data compression
