Considering T-Mobile prepaid, coming from AT&T prepaid
I live in Canada but I travel to the US quite often (at least twice a month). I have an unlocked iPhone 4S and for a long time I have been using AT&T prepaid and add on a block of data whenever I travel down. Recently AT&T changed their prepaid data plans which would cause me to fork out about $75/month.
I notice with T-Mobile there is a $2/day plan with unlimited EDGE. How fast really is EDGE on T-Mobile? Is it fast enough for moderate Facebook/Twitter usage? I'm pretty sure iMessage would work fine too, right? Also, what about streaming a radio station at 32kbps?
Also, does the unlimited text on the $2/day plan include text to Canada like on AT&T's plan?
Most radio stations stream ok using low bandwidth on tunein radio, and most all your needs should work, just don't expect miracles like fast video buffering as with 3G. You can also use a modded Opera Mini browser to get free browsing when you don't have the need to spend the $2/day which starts @ 12am to 11:59pm each day on your #'s timezone and recurs until you login and change the plan back to pay as you go. The cool thing is, each time you login to change it to $2/day and back your balance on pay as you go extends another 90 days(I think only if the balance is $10 or more). So try to change to the $2/day plan early in the day to take the best advantage of your expense and if your balance is about to expire on pay as you go, just change to another plan and back to extend it another 3 months. You cannot text to Canada, without a $50/month plan plus add-on of $10/month for unlimited, otherwise it is $0.10/text and $0.25/MMS. You can however, use Google Voice to text Canada for free using data.
EDGE isn't too bad.
You will be able to Facebook and Twitter quite a bit with it.
Only thing I could not do using 2G was YouTube videos and Flash intensive games while tethered to my laptop using 2G.
I could watch YouTube videos on my Comet using 2G though, just not on my laptop when I was tethering.

Fair warning: On the $2/day plan, T-Mobile throttles EDGE to slower than its maximum possible speed. The EDGE speeds you'd get on the $3/day plan are probably higher.
$2/day slows down both EDGE/3G speeds to 120 kbps enough for your 32 kbps radio streaming... Keep in mind Tmobile still has GPRS coverage in some place when you are o the road.. Speed is 48 kbps still good for the same low bandwith stations
