    The problem with all of this is simple;

At $25 a month.. some people were happy with VM's limited choice of phones.

Once they raise the cost, even if they introduce a couple new phones.... EVERYONE will prefer to go with a provider that allows you to BRING YOUR OWN PHONE.

    VM is doomed.
    That is so not true.

We here on Ho Fo know the ins and outs of the prepaid world. We are the vast minority of the consumer base.
For example, there are over 300 million cell phone users in the US and 1 million members of Ho Fo.

They don't know about the Bring Your Own SIM program on ST, know nothing about Red Pocket, Jolt, or Page Plus etc.
Joe and Jane Doe only know what they see on the shelves at Wal-Mart, Target, Radio Shack and so forth.
They don't know or want to deal with unlocking, flashing, APN configuring etc.

VM will still be a competitor to the vast majority of those type of customers.

The majority of consumers will only see the $35 price point on a Smartphone plan and decide it is alot cheaper than what they currently pay for their Contract Phone $99+. Then they see they can choose Unlimited Everything service plans for $55 and decide they can have it all for half of what they currently pay...

So yes, Virgin Mobile will be just fine even with minimal price adjustments.

Gotta love how frequenters of tech forums and in this case, smartphone service forums assume that the rest of the consumer base is just like them. There's something about that line of thinking that screams out of touch.

Some bloke on another forum was claiming that Samsung would lose market share to its competitors simply because the rumored processor due on the S3 would not be the most powerful. I politely asked him whether it's the case that the average iPhone owner knows or even cares about his phone's specs. Needless to say, I didn't get an answer that was responsive to my question.

And I have to laugh how everyone likes to believe he's got an MBA from Harvard Business School. Making funny predictions about Virgin Mobile's death. If only we were so intelligent and enlightened, able to see the future from our crystal balls and infinite wisdom.

I don't intend to talk to a CSR unless absolutely necessary. I assume that the future phone I buy will be activated online, thus retaining my rate plan.

In a few months, the price of a Triumph will sink drastically, just as the Intercept did.

I fully admit that my comment that "everyone" would go elsewhere was not correct. Your responses regarding the mainstream buyer and their differences to us, here in hofo... are correct. I guess I played up the doom card a bit too strong. haha. My apologies...

Being a low minute user I had been very tempted to move to Tmobile for the better phone selections as well as the better data plan, since Vmobile implemented the 2.5 gig throttle cap. But, the $5s I saved a month was enough to keep me from bolting, and have me patiently wait for first the Optimus Black(never happened) and then the EVO.

Well, now any incentive I had to stay is pretty much gone. I'll still be holding onto my Optimus V for a while, but when I finally decide to upgrade I'll be switching to Tmobile.

iPhone users don't care about specs, duh. If they did they'd have Android devices.

It's unfortunate and borderline mean that Virgin Mobile is raising its rates, again, for their oldest customer base. But if you can't have T-Mobile and you only need the data, it's still the best deal around. Heck, they could raise it another $10 and it would still be the best deal around.

Why is Virgin doing this? In their own words, they want to be seen as more likable, thanks to their Higher Calling program. How does that even... Who are they... Excuse me, I need to get inebriated somewhere.

The guy on the other end of that higher call is Dan Hesse (Sprint) reminding them that profits must be produced to pay for all the new Network initiatives NOW.

It's still only the first rate raising for most of them since they are still on the grandfathered rates.

    ATTENTION:

Some posts have been removed. Please keep this thread to discussion of VM's planned rate changes and topics that are related to it. This thread is not about who has better phone selections, when VM will get the iPhone, whether ____ phone is better than some other phone, or who has better data speeds and where--this section already has threads for those discussions. This thread does not need to be a catch-all to discuss anything and everything, please use the proper threads.

I'm with the crowd here that says once my Triumph here dies, I'm going to be moving onto another company. Straight talk or t-mobile sound tempting. I just think that this was an absolutely terrible business decision by Sprint, but hey, its Sprint... they make a lot of those. I think Virgin mobile's 25 dollar plan really set the bar for low value plans, and for those of us who use data more than talk minutes, it was a great deal. Now, other companies are catching up and, worse, Virgin Mobile is backtracking on all the things that made it worth having.

I don't really have a problem with the throttling, as it basically just affects those people that were slowing down the network for me, anyways. So, those of you who were using this as your main internet connection/torrenting/using this as your laptop's main internet connection, I have no sympathy for you. For the rest of us that used the service fairly and thought that $25 was a fair price, Sprint decided we aren't worth keeping as customers. So, I'll be moving on soon.

VM has run their course as the golden child of prepaid. With their overly generous BT $25 plan, they increased their sub polls greatly for a short time but as they get rid of grandfathering, all the legacy BT 25 users will be elimnated and equalized to $35 BT user levels . With a cap on 3G, it will be interesting to see what their move on 4G/wimax will be. VM has plenty of users compared to two years ago when it was floundering and losing people. Sprint has given Boost iden and VM its turn to shine. VM may continue to do so for a while longer if 4G kicks off and catches on but with its limited coverage and potentially higher price schematics, we'll have to see.

VM still hasn't worked on its core problems of poor network resource management, breakdowns and generally bad cs. They can keep on throwing new prepaid plans our way but with increased competition from companies like Straight Talk/Net10 , the numerous Att mvnos and the expansion of the reach of regional cdma independents (Cricket's roaming agreement with Sprint), we'll see how it all goes. I think VM will continue to hold its own but its glory days may be over . Really depends on how they implement wimax without it competing with Boost too much.

Byod for 4G on Tmo/Simple give them a major edge in that area.
