If you are going from Verizon to one of the non-Android CDMA phones, it is not really a "port" since the underlying carrier network did not change. If you go from Verizon to a GSM phone or a Sprint-based Android phone, this is a true "port."

In another post I was talking about how I was nervous about porting my number from VZW to ST. So I ended up porting to Google, which I don't regret.
A few days ago I ported my wife's number from VZW to ST on ST's website. The porting was complete within MINUTES. Very satisfied.

My port from sprint took 5 minutes as well. very smooth
I am nervous with this as well, but I have a feeling that this is just a vocal minority with trouble porting their numbers.
I must admit I'm thinking about the Google voice route also. Hopefully it would allow for some more control and flexibility.
Google voice is nice option as long as you have android phone where integration is awesome. If you have non android phone integration is crappy
correct but there are other applications that do it. whatsapp and few others allow that
Since you are paying for the service, why not use the phone to send and receive MMS? People would reply to the telephone number from whence came the messages.
