I received the OTA upgrade to ICS for my Samsung Nexus S from Telus. But when I run the install it hangs part way through with the yellow exclamation mark in the triangle. Tried it twice, same outcome. The phone is rooted but I'm pretty much a noob. Help please.

There was talk about how the 4.0.4 update to IMM76I required all files be stock. If you have changed kernels, or anything in the process of rooting, you will see problems. I would suggest heading over to XDA developers and seeing if you can get support there. They will be much more adept at sorting out your issues. There is a user over there, called efrant, he's been a major help in getting things sorted out for a lot of people.

Won't unrooting the phone delete all my apps, etc?
CharlieHull,
Unrooting means removing those system files that grant your handset the SuperUser access as well as Busybox in many cases. The apps that require root access will not work of course, but they still remain.
After you are done with putting the system files access back to the stock condition, your handset should able to take the update. Then root it all you want afterwards.

If you're rooted you could do a nandroid backup and/or user app backup so you can restore your apps or revert to your pre update setup should things go wrong.
You could also use an app called Voodoo OTA rootkeeper that temporarily 'hides' your root from detection which would likely enable to do the OTA update and restore your root access after.

Install Clockwork Mod recovery AND hide your root. Then try the update.
This did the trick for most folks including me.
The stock recovery in 4.0.3. is 'broken' and this was the cause of the error 7 message.
If this doesn't work xda forums is definitely the way to go if you MUST have the stock rom.
In my limited experience though the custom roms I've tried have been WAY better than stock. Try it you'll (probably) like it.
I'd highly recommend Cyanogen Mod 9 nightly and CyberGr.

Thanks heccubus. I was running 2.3.6 but I followed your advice, backed everything up using CWM and flashed a custom ROM. Everything worked well and I couldn't be happier with CyberGR. Stable, fast and easy to use. I think my problems are solved!
Glad it worked out for you.
